Night Festival by Michelle Simpson - Book Review, Guest Post & Giveaway

Kickstarter Project
Review by Anniek

It's hard for Magen to be away from home. When she arrives at the mansion where she'll be staying for a while she's greeted by a lovely lady who takes Magen to her room. The room hasn't been used in a while and Magen needs to clean it up before she can put her stuff away. Magen's bed is big with fluffy pillows and after a long day she quickly falls asleep. What will Magen be dreaming about?

The room has a magnificent view and it's also magical. While Magen is a sleep, the spirit neighbors enter her room and invite her to come with them to the Night Festival. Magen is thrilled to meet new friends since she feels alone. Magen has a wonderful time and loves all the lanterns that make the festival cozy and warm. I loved the fact that even without words the story and the message is so clear through the beautiful illustrations.

The Night Festival is a picture book without text. Michelle Simpson is a very skilled artist and I loved how she made the story come to live with mesmerizing drawings. The colors are very warm and powerful. It shows that even when you think you're all alone, kindness and friendship can be found around every corner. I absolutely loved this stunning picture book and my children listened mesmerized when I explained them the story in words. Night Festival is a great book to show your children that sometimes words are not needed to express how you feel.

If you like picture books which speak to your imagination and lead you to a new and magical world, you should definitely read Night Festival.

Night Festival

Why I wrote this book:

I originally started Night Festival as a personal project around 2 years ago and it slowly grew from there.  Having paid illustration work is wonderful, but it's always refreshing to have something of your own to work on in downtime, and Night Festival was that project for me. It originally started as me just wanting to draw fun scenes with my creature designs, and it just developed into something more meaningful along the way.

Eventually, I came up with the idea of creating a book everyone could read by making wordless. I always try and make everyone feel included in my illustrations anyway, so this was an opportunity to write a universal book anyone from around the world could read with no language barrier.

What I'd like to achieve:

Including everyone was the main thing I wanted to achieve with this book. Books are always geared toward a specific audience, but I find the ones that any age group can read are often the most fun and engaging. I often hear parents complain about their children watching 'empty cartoons' which I completely understand, so making the story meaningful was important.

Working in the animation industry I know some companies make cartoons specifically for making money on merchandise and nothing more, which is a little sad to see happen. When I create something I want it to have lots of meaning, one of those books you remember from your childhood forever because of the story and artwork. So naturally, the other goal I wanted to achieve of course was to create colorful and engaging illustrations.

I love creating illustrations with lots of detail and new 'easter eggs' to find every time you look at the illustrations, those were always my favorite type of books growing up. Night Festival was the perfect opportunity to create something like this.
