The Black Tide: Vanquish by Baileigh Higgins - Book Review, Interview & Giveaway

Review by Anniek

Ava and Lloyd were on a supply run when a hostile group invaded the mall they went to. Ava was captured and taken back to the group's compound. Within this group the men decide how things go. Women are only there to take care of their every need. Ava arrives with a couple of other girls and they quickly discover that their lives will never be the same again. Can Ava find a way to escape before the people who have taken her manage to break her?

Ava and the other girls have a choice. They can become fillies or drudges. Fillies take care of the men’s sexual needs and will be rewarded with good food and luxuries. If they’re lucky they’ll be a man’s favorite and will only have to keep this one man happy. Drudges prepare the food and do all kinds of chores, but are not rewarded in any way. Unfortunately for Ava, Landry, who is a terrifying sadistic man, has her in his sights. How will Ava cope with the horrors that await her?

Ava vowed to never bow for the enemy and this gives her the strength to keep going every day. She remains true to herself and even when she’s scared out of her mind she’ll keep fighting for everything she believes in. I loved Ava ever since I got to know her in The Black Tide: Remnants. I admire her bravery and the respect she has for others and I was rooting for her to survive and find her way back to her little sister, Lexi. Since that moment I’ve been hooked on her story.

The Black Tide: Vanquish is a fast-paced and thrilling story about building a new world after a virus almost wiped out humanity. Baileigh Higgins doesn’t spare her main characters and reading about the horrors that come with this new world made me hold my breath several times. The fact that a deadly virus is something that could happen in real life made me invested in this story even more. The Tides of Blood series is heart-stoppingly frightening and I had a hard time putting The Black Tide: Vanquish down because I just needed to know how the story would end. Ive been a big fan of Baileigh Higgins’s books since reading Last Another Day and am determined to read every book she'll write in the future.

If you like to read post-apocalyptic stories filled with action and unexpected twists and turns The Black Tide series will grab you from beginning till the end. Please keep in mind that The Black Tide: Vanquish is the third and last book in the Tides of Blood series. I'd advise you to read The Black Tide: Remnants and The Black Tide: Rebellion before starting this story.

About Baileigh Higgins

South African writer and coffee addict, Baileigh Higgins, lives in the Free State with hubby and best friend Brendan and loves nothing more than lazing on the couch with pizza and a bad horror movie.

Her unhealthy obsession with the end of the world has led to numerous books on the subject and a secret bunker only she knows the location of. She's never happier than when surrounded by friends and family. After all, home is with those you care the most about.

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

A bit about myself? Mm. How much time do we have? Just kidding!

I'd say I'm a dreamer. My head is always in the clouds or off on some flight of fancy. I love animals, hate cooking, and would do anything for my family. I'm just another person trying to find her place in the world and do something that matters. In that aspect, I hope my stories matter. That they make people experience things they might not otherwise feel, because that's what stories did for me when I was a shy, young kid. They made me feel like I wasn't alone.

2. Your stories all have terrifying scenes about how people cope with the end of the world as they know it. How do you prepare to write these parts?

To be honest, I don't do a lot of preparation. I'll usually envisage the scene in it's rough outlines then sit down and write it as quickly as I can. While I'm writing, I'll try to live the scene, to feel the emotions and pain associated with it. Almost as if I'm there myself.

3. If you could be a character from your Dangerous Days series who would you be and why?

Ooh, there's so many strong female characters in the series it's hard to pick, but if I had to choose only one, it'd be Nadia. Most likely because I can identify with her inner struggles and demons.

4. One of your favorite zombie movies is Dawn of the Dead. On which of their sets would you hide during the zombie outbreak?

Probably the mall. If it were with a few people I could trust, we could likely live there for quite some time before running out of supplies. If it had to be the boat, I'd try to land in uninhabited parts, scavenge for supplies, then go back onto the boat. Live on the water, so to speak.

5. Survival is just the beginning, how would you build a new life for yourself and your loved ones in case of a zombie apocalypse?

For survival in the long term, I'd go somewhere high and remote, difficult to access, and try to live off the land while keeping scavenging to a minimum. In the short term, I'd hole up in the securest place I could find, and lay low, until I could gather up my people and run.

6. Do you have a specific writing routine and if so can you tell us a little bit about it?

Every day brings new challenges and new things to face so it's hard to plan ahead. I do try to write every day, though, and to achieve a minimum number of words. To help me achieve this, I sprint with a fellow writer a few times a day. This helps both of us to keep our word count up and the creative juices flowing.

7. All of your stories take part in South Africa, where you live. In what way does your home inspire your writing?

I love my home which is why most of my stories take part there. It's a beautiful and diverse country, even with all the challenges we face. I like to think it gives my stories a fresh perspective, and I enjoy sharing a bit of my world with my readers, however peculiar it might seem.

8. What are your hobbies besides writing and reading?

I love swimming. I'm a real water baby, and the swimming pool is where you'll find me in the summer months. I also love traveling. Visiting new places and learning the culture and history is at the top of my list, for sure.

9. What inspired you to write your Death's Children series?

It started as a side project. I wanted to tell a story from a teen's perspective. It quickly ballooned into a eight part serial, though. All based on the experiences of kids and teens during the apocalypse. I firmly believe that they can be every bit as tough, if not more so, than adults given the chance.

10. What can we expect from you in the future?

Lots and lots. But to be more specific, I'm working on a spin-off series to Dangerous Days called Dangerous Nights. The first book, Dead of Night, is now available on pre-order. After that, I'm working on a new series called Hybrid Theory, a dark look at a world where greed has let loose an experimental breed of monsters which leads to the rise of a new species that has mankind hovering on the brink of extinction.
