Talented Artist - Kimberly Elfersy from My Victorian Heart - Interview & Giveaway

MyVictorianHeart
About Kimberly Elfersy

I am inspired by the grace & romance of the Victorian era.

My Victorian postcard collection and love of the literary classics are how My Victorian Heart was born. I love that antique postcards have heartfelt sentiments & notes. I love beautiful, old things with a story. This is what I want to do here for beloved customers--give them a way to preserve their memories, stories and help convey their love, gratitude or friendship with thoughtful keepsakes, gifts and favors.

I've been sewing, crafting & sharing my love of antiques & vintage goods for almost 20 years and have been an online seller for as long. I create gifts and guest favors to celebrate life events such as weddings and showers. I also create meaningful thank you, get well, cancer and sympathy support gifts. Sometimes people don't know what to say or do so, that's where I can help and gladly accept custom work.

I'm a mother of 4 (really 6 if you count the dogs), grandmother and live in St. Augustine, FL with my husband & children. I am a sarcoma & thyroid cancer survivor and advocate for rare disease legislation that helps rare disease patients find cures and treatment options.

Interview

1) Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

My name is Kimberly and I've been sewing, crafting & sharing my love of antiques & vintage goods for almost 20 years. I am married to the love of my life and am a proud mother of four (six if you count the dogs) and am a grandmother to two darling little people. I live in beautiful, historic St. Augustine, FL with my husband and our twin sons who just started college. I am a sarcoma & thyroid cancer survivor, rare disease mom and advocate for rare disease legislation that helps rare patients find cures and treatment options. You can find me in my studio most days sewing and creating, or at one of several vintage market and craft shows I love being a part of in Florida and Georgia.

2) What’s the inspiration behind your work?

I am inspired by the grace and romance of the Victorian era. My Victorian postcard collection is how it all began for me. My love of the literary classics along with my postcards is how My Victorian Heart was born. I love that antique postcards have heartfelt sentiments & notes and I love beautiful, old things with a story. Creating something meaningful for beloved customers and giving them a way to preserve their memories or helping them convey their love, gratitude and friendship gives me great joy. I create gifts and guest favors to celebrate life events such as weddings and showers. I also create meaningful thank you, get well, cancer and sympathy support gifts. Sometimes people don't know what to say or do so, that's where I can help and gladly accept custom work. It is always an honor for me and is the best part of what I do.

3) Where did you learn how to sew?

I learned to sew from my grandmother Lillie Mae using her beautiful antique Singer machine and also from Mrs. Eggleston through my middle school home economics class. I was terrible! I loved the cooking part of home ec but not that sewing class! I sewed an olive green handkerchief style top that had rick rack trim. I later took various sewing and quilting classes throughout the years, some upholstery classes, then enrolled in courses at an upholstery and sewing school in North Carolina for trade professionals where they do a lot of the window treatments and upholstery for the beautiful Biltmore Estate.

4) What does your work place look like?

I am lucky to have a sewing and craft studio at home to create away in. It is spacious and full of light from the large window that looks out on the water fountain in my front yard. If I’m lucky, I sometimes see a hummingbird taking a drink or a pair of mourning doves or cardinals dipping in and out of the fountain. I have a 6 ft. long, counter height work table for rolling out and cutting fabric and for crafting. I have a large sewing desk for my machines—where you will find my dogs Stella and Maybelle at my feet--or using my foot pedals for a pillow. I also have a work station for photography, packing and shipping.

5) You love antique postcards. Where do you find new treasures to add to your collection?

I find antique postcards in various places online. eBay and Etsy have been great resources for postcards, along with estate sales and other websites.

6) How did you fall in love with the Victorian period?

I fell in love with the Victorian period through those collectible dolls all dressed up in Victorian-style finery when I was a little girl. My grandmother, mother and ladies in their family all had dolls like these and I just fell in love with them. It grew from there through books, movies and the postcards of course.

7) You make beautiful vintage bookish items, where does your love for books come from?

I love books. I have always loved books since I can remember. I can’t live without books and often have more than one book going, either on my tablet or an audio book and an actual book to read in bed at night. I love going to the library. I love the scent of books, old and new. I especially adore the old Victorian gift books with poetry. I. Love. Books.

8) Can you tell a bit more about how you started your store?

MyVictorianHeart was created in December 2017. I just recently opened it. It’s the product of what is in my heart to do with my work. It is a bit of a spinoff of my former shop The Joyful Home where I originally offered my Jane Austen/Regency inspired gifts there. But, if I am being really honest here, I wanted a fresh start, too. I was sick with two cancers off and on throughout 5 of the 7 years I had TheJoyfulHome plus two of my children had serious illnesses. I had started TheJoyfulHome shop as a way to channel my thoughts to positive, beautiful things as a way to heal and cope. And, it was my saving grace that way but, I was ready for a change, hence MyVictorianHeart.

9) What do you like the most about having your own shop?

What I love the most about having my own shop is the opportunity I have each day to create something that will make someone feel loved. The thought that someone chose my gifts to become another’s makes my day. I am honored and touched always by this. I know what it is like to need to know I am loved or was thought enough of that someone did something nice for me or gave me a thoughtful gift when I or my children were sick—or even when one is well. Either way, I know what it meant to me and doing this means the world to me.

10) What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future include expanding my literary inspired gifts and expanding more on my line of Inspirational and Grace Gifts. I dream of visiting Biltmore Estate and hope to very soon.
