The Brotherhood of Brimstone: Gangster School by Kate Wiseman - Book Review & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Suze

Milly and Charlie have become good friends. They’re going to Blaggard’s, a school where the children of criminals are being trained to become the best in their field. Milly and Charlie aren’t typical criminals, but they are good spies and clever plotters. Charlie’s computer skills and Milly’s creative thinking are extremely helpful to solve each mystery they encounter. Together with their robot dog and Charlie’s smelly pet dog they try to rescue their school from the constant threat it’s under.

The Brotherhood of Brimstone, a secret society that’s holding regular meetings on the school grounds, is planning something evil. When a disastrous theft puts the future of the school in jeopardy Charlie and Milly are the only ones who can save the day. Will they be able to keep pretending they’re as evil as their fellow classmates, while making sure the school keeps its impenetrable image? Will they make their parents proud and will their newfound friendship be able to survive the constant obstacles in its way?

Gangster School: The Brotherhood of Brimstone is a terrific gripping story. I love the wonderful super smart and resourceful Milly and the bright and kindhearted Charlie. They’re a fantastic pair. Their adventures are surprising and fun and I enjoyed every single page. They don’t easily fit in at Blaggard’s, but they make it work. Because of their carefully constructed plans they’re always prepared and they’re much more resilient, informed and attentive than their classmates and teachers, due to which they’re usually one step ahead. I love their easy friendship and each new idea they execute, they make the story a true joy to read.

Kate Wiseman has an easy flowing writing style that’s filled with humor and warmth. Her descriptions are thorough and imaginative, which makes her story come to life in a great way. I had no difficulties to picture Blaggard’s and liked every single detail of the school, the teachers and the pupils. The idea of a school to train criminals is brilliant and the execution is flawless. Reading about Milly and Charlie’s antics put a big smile on my face, I absolutely love this unusual quirky duo. I highly recommend their amazing stories and can’t wait to read more about this delightful pair.

Advice

Gangster School: The Brotherhood of Brimstone is meant for the 10 to 18 age category, but is perfect for anyone who loves an entertaining story about friendship at a terrific original high school. I’d advise you to start with the first book in the Blaggard’s series, Gangster School before reading The Brotherhood of Brimstone.

About Kate Wiseman

Kate is a children’s writer. She lives in Saffron Walden with her husband, her son (when he’s home from university) and three neurotic cats. One of her cats, Maisie, is actually a ghost cat now, but Kate still talks to her every day.

Kate was a late developer. Before going to university at the age of 38 to study creative writing, she did lots of different jobs ranging from working in a library to promotions work. When she grew up a bit she worked in schools, doing everything from mopping up sick to judging poetry competitions. She graduated from uni with a First and annoyed her family and friends by bringing it into every conversation for a Very Long Time. She also has a Masters in English Literature, which she took while she was trying to gather the courage to write children’s fiction.

Her claims to fame include winning a prize in a Halloween competition that she hadn’t even entered – “I was just standing there, looking at the costumes,” having criminal ancestors who were hanged and fainting onto a famous film director in a London theatre.

When she’s not fainting on the famous or scaring people with her witchy looks, she writes about Blaggard’s School for Tomorrow’s Tyrants, the world’s best school for trainee criminals. The idea for Blaggard’s originated with her son, who used to say that when he grew up he wanted to be an evil genius. He’s now studying history, so perhaps the world is safe. Or is he just biding his time…..?

  16. This sounds fun. Can't wait to see what adventures/crimes they get up to. Love the idea of a "robot" dog - at least I wouldn't have a pocket full of poop bags in every coat I have. Love the colours of the cover as well.

  20. You won a Halloween competition and you hadn't even entered? That's so funny! Our pets are (hopefully) with us for many years & help to make us who we are; I think it's perfectly natural to continue to include them in our daily lives.
