Saving the Sheriff by Kadie Scott - Book Review, Guest Post & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads
Review by Suze

Holly is back in her old hometown, where she’s working as a vet. She always dreamed of working with animals, but her choice to leave and study came with a price. Holly doesn’t know if the town will blame her for going away, but most people welcome her with open arms. The only person who isn’t happy with her arrival is Cash, the town’s sheriff. He was married to Holly’s best friend Georgia. Even though Georgia knew about Holly’s feelings for Cash, she went after the man that made Holly’s heart beat faster anyway. Georgia’s little girl Sophia mended their rift, but becoming best friends again put a huge responsibility on Holly’s shoulders. She knows things about Georgia that she hasn’t told anyone else and this knowledge can cause difficulties for everyone Holly holds dear. What can she do to make the situation right again?

Cash doesn’t want to like Holly. After Georgia broke his heart just before she died, Cash doesn’t trust women, especially not his late wife’s best friend. Sophia loves Holly though and keeps wanting to spend time with her. Each moment in the woman’s company weakens Cash’s resolve. Does Holly really deserve his distrust and the distance he tries to keep because of it and what will happen when he opens his heart again? Can Cash risk letting the one woman he isn’t supposed to like back into his life?

Saving the Sheriff is a wonderful romantic story. I loved Holly. She has a great own style and she’s fabulous with both animals and people. Being a vet suits her and I enjoyed reading about her job. Cash is serious and closed off and it’s time for him to feel some happiness again. He loves Sophia with all his heart and because of her he starts being kinder to Holly. Holly brings back Sophia’s sunny nature and I liked how sweet they are together. This is a lovely addition to the chemistry that is always surfacing as soon as Cash and Holly see each other. Finding out if they’d have a chance at love together despite the large number of obstacles they have to overcome kept me glued to the pages.

Kadie Scott has a warm and descriptive writing style. Her writing has a nice constant flow and I was captivated by her beautiful setting, her main characters and the emotions she so cleverly paints a picture of. Saving the Sheriff is charming and fascinating. It’s a delightful feelgood story with many terrific twists and turns and gorgeous main characters. I highly recommend this amazing book.

Advice

If you like small town romance Saving the Sheriff would be a perfect choice.

About Kadie Scott

Contemporary romance author, Kadie Scott, grew up consuming books and exploring the world through her writing. She attempted to find a practical career related to her favorite pastime by earning a degree in English Rhetoric (Technical Writing). However, she swiftly discovered that writing without imagination is not nearly as fun as writing with it. No matter the genre, she loves to write feisty heroines, sexy heroes who deserve them, and a cast of lovable characters to surround them (and maybe get their own stories).

10+ years since finishing her first book, Kadie has published 22 novels/novellas under two pen names with more to come. An award-winning author, several of her books have won, placed, or finaled in multiple awards. She is also the owner/operator of Authors On A Dime, a company which provides a la carte services to help authors like herself. Kadie loves every part of the publishing journey and considers herself lucky to be living out her dream every day.

Kadie currently resides in Austin, Texas, with her own personal hero (and she married that guy!) and their two children, who are growing up way too fast.

Texas… Dancing!
Guest post by Kadie Scott

I love to write about Texas because I grew up here. To me, Texas is home, and memories, and a wonderful place I’m proud to be part of. One of the best aspects of writing books set in Texas is coming up with things about my state or my life that I want to highlight for those who don’t live here.

In Saving the Sheriff, one of those aspects of Texas life I tried to bring to the page was… Texas dancing.

You heard me. There is nothing sexier than a cowboy who can move his stuff on the dance floor. However, I would feel remiss if I didn’t take a moment to educate you on what I mean by Texas dancing. Thanks to Hollywood, every person not from Texas pictures this as line dancing.

Nope! Let’s revise that to hell, no!

First of all, in Texas we do have a range of options when it comes to clubs and dancing, and not all of it is country. In fact, in the big cities (did you know Houston is the 3rd largest city in the entire US?) I’d argue most of the clubs are the same as you’d find anywhere else. But for my purposes, I’m focusing on what you’d picture in smaller towns—the bars and honkytonks and what goes on in there.

My younger, single years were spent in a lot of establishments with names like Hurricane Harry’s or Denim and Diamonds (D&Ds for short). These places look just like you’d expect—wooden flooring, long wood bar, wrought iron fixtures, neon signs, DJ booth, stage or area for a live band, sometimes a mechanical bull, and lots of beer. But, instead of the dance floor being packed with line dancing fools, it’s packed with…couples.

Every once in a while, the DJ or band will break out in a song that gets everyone on the floor—yes line dancing, but also the usual R&B stuff you’d hear in most any club. But at least 80% of the time, the songs played are country, and the people dancing are couples doing things like the two-step, polka (not like you’re thinking), waltz (again, you’re way off), and jitterbug (yup, also not what you’d expect).

I learned to do all these dances in high school, and I got even better at them in college by taking lessons from a performance group at Texas A&M called the Aggie Wranglers

These students are the best at the type of dancing I’m talking about, but if you go to just about any Texas country dance hall/bar, and you’ll see at least a few couples spinning and flipping in this style of dancing, and just about everyone doing at least a basic version. Most Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights, the floor is so packed, you can’t do the fancy moves.

And let me tell you, while a cowboy who can move is sexy, there is also nothing more romantic than being in the arms of a man who knows how to take the lead on a dance floor (and I’m not talking just swaying side to side).

You want to see what I’m talking about? Check out this video (Make sure you get all the way to the part about the jitterbugging. That’s my favorite!)

BTW…The pictures of the couple dancing is me and my husband at our wedding, and that’s a jitterbug (in a wedding dress). Whoop!
