Talented Artist - Justin and Sarah from Five Sprouts Stitching - Interview & Giveaway

Five Sprouts Stitching

About Justin and Sarah

"Our designs are simple, useful, well-made, unique and beautiful. We want to make something special that you will look forward to using every day." - Me.

That's my quote. That's what I say when people ask what we do. The guiding ideas behind all our designs are simplicity, uniqueness, usefulness, beauty, and suburb construction. We want to create something you enjoy using day after day - and for a long time.

Hi! Justin here. Welcome to Five Sprouts Stitching. My wife, Sarah, and I are indie artisans originally from the San Fransico Bay Area and currently residing in the sun-scorched prairies of Wyoming.

We have a passion for designing and handcrafting unique accessories for day-to-day life, travel, productivity, and creativity.

The fabrics are chosen for their unique, colorful, and bold designs. They come mostly from indie design houses and are purchased from small quilt shops or right here from Etsy! We are committed to helping other small businesses.

Interview

1) Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

I'm from Bigfork, Montana and Sarah is from Willets, California. We met in Sausalito, California in 1998 and have been married since 1999.

I love things art and creating related: writing, designing, sewing, finish carpentry, drawing (which I just started doing), and especially photography. Sarah enjoys travel and painting.

2) What’s the inspiration behind your work?

To use our talents to create high-quality things that are useful, fun, and unique.

3) Where did you learn how to sew?

Sarah learned to sew from a master seamstress when we lived in Sheridan, Wyoming. As our shop slowly grew and became too much for her to do herself, she taught me how to sew.

4) What does your workplace look like?

It's organized and efficient. Since it's just my wife and me, and we have a lot of orders to process, we can't afford to be disorganized. We have two different workstations so that we can both stay busy and productive without getting in each other's way.

5) You make beautiful fabric book sleeves, where does your love for books come from?

I have been an avid reader since a few years after high school. My love for books comes from a love of learning new things and exploring every facet of subjects that I'm interested in. I mostly - like 99.9% of the time - read non-fiction books (I think the last fiction book I read was " On The Road," and that was probably 20 years ago).

I usually have about four books going at once, and they typically are in the realm of philosophy, religion, business, productivity, motivation, quotes and cultural wisdom type books.

6) Can you tell a bit more about how you started your store?

We started our store in 2011 selling baby items (which we want to do again in the future under a different brand). It was a huge learning curve. My wife knew how to sew, but that's about all we knew. We didn't know anything about selling products online or running a business. It turned out sewing and making things was by far the easiest aspect of our business. It took a long time to learn all the elements that go into running an online store.

7) How do you select the fabrics you use?

In the last few years, the fabric world has been exploding with tons of amazing and unique designs. This makes it really easy to find cool prints. We look for fabrics that are fun, bright, with a cute design or theme.

8) You are in the top 100 of most successful Etsy sellers of mobile accessories. How does it feel to get this kind of appreciation?

It feels good to have a successful shop and to realize that our hard work and many late nights sewing has paid off. We also love the fact that people enjoy using what we make.

9) What are your plans for the future?

Right now, it's to stay small. We enjoy making everything ourselves and having direct contact with our customers - this keeps the quality of our products and customer service high. We also have a whole bunch of new products to add as we find the time.
