Talented Artist - Jules from Bookbuddle - Interview & Giveaway

About Jules

As a book lover, I got fed up of my books getting marked and the pages bent after throwing them in my handbag & made myself a book cover to protect them. After people commented on how lovely they were, I began to make them for friends & family, and now here I am with my very own Etsy shop!

If you have any specific requirements for a Buddle, please just ask & I will do my best to accommodate your requirements.

Many thanks & I hope you love them as much as I do!

Jules :)

1) Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

As well as being a book lover, I'm a paramedic with the ambulance service. My job can be challenging, upsetting and stressful at times so books really help me to escape. I’m also a little bit obsessed with keeping fit! I run 4-5 times a week & have run several marathons and recently an ultra marathon (only 53.5 miles!).

2) What’s the inspiration behind your work?

I created Buddle to look after my books, because I like my books to remain as pristine as possible. Initially, it was just something I made for myself, but after positive comments from others, I decided to sell them. And they are doing extremely well out there in the book loving world!

3) Where did you learn how to sew?

My nan taught me how to crochet first. My mum & my nan also used to sew a lot - my nan even made my mum’s wedding dress! So I’ve learnt everything I know from them!

4) What does your work place look like?

At the moment, I don’t have a set work place. My partner & I have recently moved house so we’re a little upside down. Currently, I have everything set up in the dining room, but eventually I hope to use our spare bedroom which has a view over our beautiful garden!

5) You make beautiful fabric book sleeves, where does your love for books come from?

I’ve always read books. I loved Roald Dahl when I was younger. Over the years, I’ve been to university & got out of reading because I didn’t have time. Now, my university days are over, I’ve been reading pretty much non-stop for the last 4 years or so. I get through around 60-100 books a year depending on how busy I am with sewing & running!

6) Can you tell a bit more about how you started your store?

Etsy is an extremely useful platform for selling crafty products. I do get a lot of business from social media, especially Twitter, but I need a shop style platform to open up to other people. Etsy works perfectly!

7) How do you select the fabrics you use?

I try to look at what’s popular - foxes, cats and flamingoes are my biggest sellers! I also consider what time of year it is, so flowers & tropical themes do well in summer. I’ll soon be looking at getting some Christmas ones on Etsy!

8) You use a lot of animal themed fabrics for your book sleeves, what's your favorite animal?

I love cats but unfortunately I don’t have one. My sister has two & I get to seen them, and we also now have a Kitty Cafe in Leeds which is brilliant!

9) What do you like the most about having your own shop?

I love the feedback I get, so far it’s all new positive, commenting on the quality, the fabrics and how much they protect their books. It makes me so proud of what I’ve achieved when I get such great feedback!

10) What are your plans for the future?

I’d love to eventually have my own bookshop, in which I could make & sell my Buddles. At the moment, it’s only a dream but who knows what the future will bring?!
