Talented Artist - Carissa from Bookery Boutique - Interview & Giveaway

Bookery Boutique
About Carissa

I am a librarian, designer, and shop owner. I love spending my time with my 3 kids, 2 dachshunds, and many books. Sipping wine with friends and taking hikes with my husband on our forested island in Alaska are good too! I'm all about celebrating the good things in life.

I have a family/kid- friendly shop showcasing my boys' designs (which I help them edit/manage). Find them at www.etsy.com/shop/wanderboysco.

Interview

1) Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

I’m a transplanted Floridian living in Alaska. I have three kids, two dogs, and I work full-time as a school librarian in addition to running Bookery Boutique (with stores on Amazon, Etsy, and Redbubble). I’m teaching myself to play the ukulele, which I’m obsessed with! My family enjoys boating, camping, and other outdoor sports. Sometimes I just read. ;)

We’ve been here in Alaska for 16 years and love the amazing scenery and small-town community where we live.

2) What’s the inspiration behind your work?

My love of books and wanting to share that with as many as I can! I get a happy feeling thinking of others wearing one of my designs or receiving an item as a bookish gift.

3) Where did you learn how to design?

I’ve been interested in design for years. I started with classes on lettering, watercolor, and even doodling. I still have a lot more I want to learn, so I’m never satisfied. Adding more hand-lettering typography and artwork to my designs is a goal for the coming year.

4) What does your workplace look like?

Since a lot of my designs are digital, I have a minimal desk and a comfy chair, my printer, and Macbook. Two screens are better than one! I also have to share my chair with at least one of my two Dachshunds. In the dining room, I have a large rolling cart of art supplies that my kids and I use. It can look like an art/craft explosion in just minutes.

5) You love inspirational or funny quotes. How do you select the quotes you use for your products?

Coming up with original ideas and quotes is important, but I also like to take quotes from a classic public domain work. Although you can see it everywhere with online stores, I stay away from fan favorites like Harry Potter since that is copyright infringement. Taking a popular saying or idea and twisting it into a new meaning is a lot of fun, though, and customers enjoy that.

One example is my Talk Darcy to Me design on Amazon and Etsy, which has done well with Jane Austen fans. As a consumer of graphic tees and mugs, I ask myself what I personally want to wear or buy for others and start there!

6) Where does your love for books come from?

I’ve always been a reader. But it was my parents love of reading that helped my own interest grow. I remember that my parents gifted me lovely hardcover classics like Little Women, A Little Princess, and Swiss Family Robinson (which I still have), and I would read them over and over. As a teen, I went through a long phase of spy books and thrillers. I loved taking trips to the library every couple of weeks for a new haul. I was that kid that would take an extra long bathroom break so I could finish reading and escape school work or chores. ;)

7) You're also a librarian. What do you like the most about your job?

Being a school librarian is so varied. It’s never boring! I teach online and face-to-face classes in Digital Literacy, and manage events and programs in addition to the library program. Finding a reluctant reader the perfect book is my absolute favorite part of the job. There are more reluctant readers than ever with the onslaught of digital media, and it’s my mission to get good reads into kids’ hands!

8) Can you tell a bit more about how you started your store?

I developed the idea in 2016 when I was having a hard time finding bookish and inspirational gear online. There is a lot more available now, but at that time, it seemed like I couldn’t find something that fit my style for an affordable price. Since I’ve always loved creative ventures but didn’t have an outlet, I decided to try my hand at making my own.

9) What do you like the most about having your own shop?

I love the feeling of accomplishment with a new creation and discovering what customers want. Although I never have the time to do everything I want to do with the Bookery Boutique brand online, it’s rewarding and so much fun!

10) What are your plans for the future?

Continue improving my designs and the offerings I have on Amazon, Etsy, and online. My two boys (age 10 and 13) are interested in designing too, so I’m helping them learn and get started with their own Wander Boys brand. Maybe we’ll start a family business someday!
