Shameless King by Maya Hughes - Book Review, Interview & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads Bookdepository

Book review by Anniek

Makenna always worked hard during high school. She couldn't wait to leave home and go to college. Since the death of her younger brother her parents haven't been the same. Her mother struggles to let go of her grief and Makenna feels guilty every single day. Her brother was a genius and Makenna studies extra hard to make up for losing him. Now her father is having health problems and Makenna constantly worries about her family. She never dated a boy and has a reputation because of it, but on her prom she allows herself one night of fun. She dances with Declan, a King of Rittenhouse Prep on the ice. Will Declan be able to melt the Ice Queen?

Declan's goal in life is to play professional ice hockey. His father was a star on the ice as well, but Declan wants nothing from the man who walked out on him and his mother. Declan is not doing well in all of his classes and he needs to get his grades up or the coach will kick him off the team. He's partnered up with Makenna and they have to find a way to work together. Makenna doesn't have much confidence in Declan and they get under each other's skin all the time. Are they able to put their differences aside to make their assignment a success?

Makenna has a tough exterior and a sharp tongue. This gives others the impression that she's an Ice Queen. People think she's snobby and that she looks down on people, but no one knows the truth. Makenna needs to keep up her walls to survive. Her father has been diagnosed with a terrible disease and my heart ached for Makenna because she has to go through the pain of losing another loved one. Living is exactly what she needs, even if it's only for a short while. Declan feels alive when he's on the ice and he's very passionate. He's adored everywhere he goes, but there's only one girl who makes his heart beat faster. I love to read stories about how opposites attract and I was rooting for them to find common ground.

Shameless King is a beautiful and heart-wrenching story about love, loss and learning to trust. Makenna and Declan have amazing chemistry and I loved their banter and heated discussions. Declan is used to girls falling at his feet and Makenna keeps him on his toes, which made me laugh many times. Maya Hughes doesn't shy away from difficult topics and writes about them very respectfully. Her main characters really stand out and because of them Shameless King is absolutely wonderful. It's a delightful story with fascinating main characters and many interesting emotional layers.

If you like emotional romantic NA Shameless King would be a perfect choice.

About Maya Hughes

Maya Hughes is an author of hot romance novels with heart. Her debut novel Passion on the Pitch is about an American girl finding love with an Irish footballer (soccer player).

Maya is a longtime fan of romance novels, sci-fi books and films, and burning up massive amounts of time procrastinating on the internet.

When she's not writing, reading or procrastinating, Maya loves to spend time with her awesome kids and amazing husband, who has supported her every step of the way.

1) Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

I'm a lover of wine, procrastination and baking. I have three kids and they are part of the reason I write. They love to ask about my books and pitch me story ideas. It's a great feeling when they tell their friends their mom is a writer.

2) What does a typical day look like for you?

I wake up crazy early (4-5am) and try to write. Then we get the kids up to bed and my husband and I are off to work. Once I get home from work we do homework or hang out with the kids, make dinner and put them to bed. Once everyone is tucked in, I fire up the computer and try to write some more or get in some other admin type tasks.

3) You're a longtime fan of romance novels. Where does that love come from?

I have no idea. Probably snagging my first one off a shelf at my grandmothers and sneak-reading it. And then I could go to the bookstore as often as I could and read books there. My mom and sisters would be shopping and I was tucked away in Barnes and Noble or Borders reading away.

4) Do you have a specific writing routine?

I write to keep to a set schedule, so I don't get too off schedule, but that doesn't always work. Sometimes depending on the mood of the scene I'm writing, I'll put on music. Other times, I need silence. It all depends on what my characters and the story need from me.

5) Can you describe Makenna and Declan in 7 words each?

Oh wow! That's so hard!!!

Makenna: strong, resilient, amazing, heart-of-gold (does that count as one word or three?), and headstrong.

Declan: cocky, loyal, determined, sexy as hell, and athletic

6) What do you like to do when you aren’t writing, what are your hobbies besides books?

I love to bake and cook, especially with my kids. We usually get more flour on the counter than in the bowls, but it's so much fun.

7) Makenna and Declan have very different personalities. Why do you think opposites attract and why does this kind of love work so well for a story?

I think it's because a lot of times we're looking for the thing we're missing. Someone quiet is looking for someone loud to be their voice or help them find their own. Someone brave might want to be protective of someone else who's sacred. It's a reflection of what's lacking and what someone might be missing in their life. I think that's why opposite's attract so often.

8) What makes your heart beat faster?

My husband ;) He's pretty awesome and so incredibly supportive. Him aside, a good fight in a book that turns into some bow chicka wow wow. I love that anger and passion funneled into the attraction. And it's so much nicer when it's on the page versus real life.

9) How did your writing career start?

It started when my friend told me back in January 2017 to just publish already. She said it and then I did. It was weird how it clicked. And I haven't looked back yet.

10) What are your plans for the future?

To eventually be able to write full time. With every book I learn something new about myself and my writing style. I have grown so much as a writer and I want to keep doing that for as long as the stories come to me and my characters keep knocking on my door every time I turn around. There are so many more stories I have to tell and I can't wait to share them.
