Seaside Sweets by Melissa Chambers - Book Review, Interview & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads Bookdepository

Review by Suze

Seanna is in Seaside Florida to escape her ex. He’s emptied her bank account, maxed her credit card, cost her her job and he’s living in the apartment she has to pay for until the end of the year. Because of him Seanna is completely broke. Spending time with her favorite aunt will heal her and in the meantime she can look for a job. Seanna is done with men, but then she meets Blake. He’s everything she’s ever wanted. However, after all the drama and low times she went through, love is the last thing she’s looking for. Seanna’s friends have different ideas though, will they successfully push her in the right direction?

Blake experienced something traumatic that he can’t seem to process. He lost everything in one single moment. He went to Seaside to start over and while he has plenty of friends nobody knows his history. When he meets Seanna Blake finally starts looking at the future again. He’s no longer just a scared and broken man because of his past, but he’s also not ready for something long lasting and deep. While his friends encourage him to take a step in the right direction Blake constantly fights the urge to run away. Do he and Seanna have a chance together or are they both too damaged to embrace true love when it’s presenting itself?

Seaside Sweets is a wonderful romantic story. Seanna is a strong woman. Her ex stole from her and even though she doesn’t have much money she’s determined to find a solution to her problems by herself. She works hard, so she can earn the last amount of money she owes because of her ex. She’s finally finding herself in Seaside and is slowly discovering what it’s like to feel happy again. I loved the beautiful friendships she has. The same goes for the gentle and caring, but wounded Blake. Seanna and Blake are lucky with their fabulous kindhearted, caring and constantly interfering friends, it’s something special that made the story truly stand out for me.

Melissa Chambers has a warm and welcoming writing style that easily drew me into her story. Seaside Sweets is fast-paced and often entertaining, combined with the exact right amount of depth. I couldn’t put it down and effortlessly read the story in one sitting. I love it when a book manages to grab me like that. The setting is amazing, the main characters are fantastic and the summery feelgood vibe is delightful. I highly recommend Seaside Sweets, it’s a gorgeous sexy story filled with real love, unconditional friendship and unbreakable bonds.

If you love small town romance you don't want to miss Seaside Sweets.

About Melissa Chambers

Melissa Chambers writes contemporary novels for young, new, and actual adults. A Nashville native, she spends her days working in the music industry and her nights tapping away at her keyboard. While she’s slightly obsessed with alt rock, she leaves the guitar playing to her husband and kid. She never misses a chance to play a tennis match, listen to an audiobook, or eat a bowl of ice cream. (Rocky road, please!) She serves as president for the Music City Romance Writers and is the author of the Love Along Hwy 30A series, the Before Forever series (YA), and Courting Carlyn (YA).

Thank you so much for having me and for reading Seaside Sweets!

1) Can you tell a little bit about yourself?

I’m a Nashville native who works in the music business, I graduated from the University of Tennessee (Go Vols!), and I’ve got a guitar-playing husband and a bass-playing kid. Our house is rarely quiet!

2) What’s the inspiration behind the Love Along Hwy 30A series?

30A, for sure! If you live in the Southeast, this number makes perfect sense to you. But for those of you who don’t, it’s a 24-mile road that runs mostly along the beach between Destin and Panama City, Florida, and it’s home to 13 quaint and beautiful communities, each completely unique from one another. This is not a place of tacky T-shirt shops (though I love those beach towns as well!). There are no chain stores or major high-rises allowed in the area, just mom and pop gift shops and restaurants. It’s a truly magical area, and it begged for a series of romance novels set in the different communities!

3) Can you tell a little bit more about the main characters of Seaside Sweets?

Seanna is no-nonsense, but she’s also got a huge heart that she wears on her sleeve, which gets her in trouble sometimes. She’s been screwed over by her ex who has a gambling problem, so she heads to Seaside to see her aunt and get a break from him after he gets her fired from her job. When Blake, her aunt’s co-worker and friend, meets Seanna, she ignites something in him he’s been tamping down for years. He’s got a past he’s hiding that has kept him from any romance for three years, but Seanna’s getting ready to change all that!

4) Seaside is a special small town, how did you get the idea to write about it and what do you like the most about small town romance?

Seaside is sort of the heart of the 30A communities. Anyone who goes to 30A for vacation to stay in any of the neighborhoods, ends up in Seaside to visit the many shops, art galleries, and delicious seafood restaurants. For sure, they stop in at the Modica Market which is the area’s artisanal market and has the best cranberry walnut muffins. Next to Modica Market is Sundog Books (where you can find all three books in my series!) which is always teaming with people looking for beach reads, and upstairs is the completely hip Central Square Records which has, seriously, more vinyl than any record store I’ve seen.

So you can see why I started the series in Seaside. Every time I go there, I’m in awe of the place and get a special sense of home, so it was effortless for me to place these characters there and flush out their stories. The best thing about small town romance is the sense of community and closeness with the characters, and this series features a friend group that benefits from the small town feel of this area.

5) What should a good happy ending look like in your opinion?

When you pick up a Melissa Chambers book, you are guaranteed a happy ending! I can’t imagine leaving readers without hope for these couples! But the ideal happy ending needs to be earned by the characters. The romance is always something they didn’t ask for, at least not with the person who they can’t quit thinking about. But love always wins! (Not to sound completely cheesy or anything!)

6) You love music, how does this love influence your writing?

I love it so much! It played a big role in my first two published novels, The Summer Before Forever and Falling for Forever, which are both YA. I think in YA you can focus on the music a little more. With this series, I had to toss it into all three books, but since I’m a big fan of current alt rock, I had to dig into my classic rock arsenal to make sure I wasn’t alienating my adult readers. I realize I listen to music a teenager likes, which does come in handy when I write my YA’s!

7) How did your writing journey start?

Really kind of out of the blue. I’m a late bloomer. I didn’t start writing until 2010. There’s something that happens to you when you realize you’re going to one day turn 40. Suddenly “someday” doesn’t seem so far off! I had an idea for a novel, and I decided I’d just start writing it. I enjoyed it so much, that I kept going! I would watch an episode of Mad Men, then I’d write a little. This went on until I had the whole series watched. My first novel is nothing like Mad Men, but the excellent writing on that show inspired me.

8) Where does your passion for romance come from?

Oh, God, I’ve always been boy crazy! In nursery school, I had two boyfriends. My family knew all about it. Of course the boys didn’t know, but they really didn’t need to! I’ve always loved rom coms. I own so many of them. My favorite movie of all-time is Valley Girl, which I recently just re-watched and it totally stands the test of time. I’m such a sucker for a swoony guy and a happily ever after!

9) How do you combine writing stories with your job in the music industry and a busy family life?

I’ll tell you…it’s not easy! But I will say I do better with staying focused on my writing when I’m working, because I’m on a schedule that must be followed or nothing gets written! If I ever have a week off where we don’t go out of town, I don’t get as much done as I would during a regular work week. I already have to be up by 6:00, so I can’t get up any earlier than that like so many writers do (bless them!), so I write at nighttime. I used to have to wait for my kid to go to sleep, but he’s a little older now and isn’t as keen to hang with his mom like he used to be. *sniff sniff* But it’s all good! And I always step away from the computer when he wants to tell me something, or just needs a hug, which is actually fortifying for me!

10) What are your plans for the future?

So. Many. Plans! Seriously, I have so many books I want to write and that I talk about writing, so it’s hard to focus on just one! I have book four in the Love Along Hwy 30A series all mapped out in my head, so I will focus on that soon. I also have a series that takes place in New Orleans percolating (book one is done…just need to map out a couple of others). And I’m currently writing another YA set at the beach, my favorite setting!

Thanks again so much for having me today!
