The Black Tide: Remnants by Baileigh Higgins - Book Review & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Anniek

Ava and her younger sister Lexi are living in the small town Riebeeckstad together with their father. Life changed completely when Ava and Lexi's mother lost her life in a car crash. The sisters and their father tried to pick up the pieces and are living their lives the best way they possibly can, but it isn't always easy. They have their loss to deal with, but their can't take their time to mourn, because there's a huge threat hanging over them. The black tide is a terrifying and deadly virus and it's spreading all over the world. Some countries have closed their borders and others are barely holding on. How long will it take before the black tide will make it to Ava's town?

Ava works at a pharmacy and now that her father doesn't have a job anymore her paycheck is desperately needed to pay the bills. The schools are closed, food and other groceries are becoming scarce and overpriced and people are getting violent. Ava sees first-hand how people react in times of despair and it's not a pretty sight. When the army arrives people are hoping that the soldiers will keep them safe from the virus. What will happen when the army turns out to be their worst enemy?

Ava needs to take care of her sister and she'll do anything to make Lexi's life a bit better. Some of the choices she makes are dangerous and selfish, but she needs these outlets to stay sane. I loved her strength and admired how she keeps fighting for a better life. Some people become friends and others can best be avoided. In a dying world she has to listen to her gut instinct if she wants to live another day and that is exactly what Ava does. She is a true heroine and I loved her and her sister from the start.

The Black Tide: Remnants is a blood-curdling story about surviving in a virus infected world. The fact that deadly viruses do exist in real life made this book even more terrifying for me. When the world falls apart, the ones who remain won't always be the people with the best intentions. I've read a lot of books written by Baileigh Higgins and I already know that she's more than skilled at writing stories that will haunt you long after you finish the book. The Black Tide is another brilliant first story by one of my all time favorite horror authors. It's a promising start of the Tides of Blood series and I can't wait to read the next chapter of Ava and Lexi's adventure.

If you're a fan of post-apocalyptic stories you shouldn't miss The Black Tide: Remnants. Please note that this is the first book in a series and that the story will continue in the next book, The Black Tide: Rebellion.
