Talented Artist - Desislava Ivanova from Couleur Des Pluies - Interview & Giveaway

Couleur Des Pluies

Interview

1) Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

My name is Desislava Ivanova, I am 33 years old, I live and work in Sofia, Bulgaria. I love animals and nature as well as water in all shapes such as rain, seas, lakes, rivers and even a glass of water :) This is one of the reasons why my store is called 'Couleur Des Pluies' (a color of rain) I am very self-critical and self-righteous, sometimes is good, but sometimes it hinders me. On the other hand, I am a big dreamer, I believe in miracles, and everything that happens to us has reason.

2) What’s the inspiration behind your work?

I am inspired by everything around me - colors, sounds, aromas, feelings, moods. For example, a wonderful spring rain can be extremely refreshing and inspiring. The opinion and joy of the people who like my stuff also inspires me and makes me try to do better and more interesting things that inspire them in some way and make them smile. And sometimes, when I paint besides all this, I can only be inspired by piece of fabric that is waiting to express my momentary mood for color and shape and after that become a cover.

3) Where did you learn how to sew?

About sewing – I am self-taught. I wanted to become a ashion designer and started to study higher education specialty fashion. It turned out that all of my colleagues had learned to sew in the middle school and at the university no one was teaching you that. I could not, but I bought a sewing machine and decided I would learn it. After studying for three and a half years, I decided I did not want to go on and finish, as the direction of this education was more about drawing patterns, working with programs, precise measures, and things that set art as I did I understand in the background. I wanted to use and develop my imagination in a different way. But as I said above, everything happens with a reason, so years after that, just came the idea, I had a machine available and it was time to use it.

4) What does your work place look like?

I work at my home where I feel comfort because I have large windows and very bright space, but sometimes I think I need bigger place. To work at home is a great advantage because I often love to work at night and if I had a separate studio somewhere else I would sleep there :) My work place It's quite messy. Before I started sewing, I often moved the furniture home because I don’t like monotony. Now this is not necessary. Everything looks different every day :)))

5) You make beautiful fabric book sleeves, where does your love for books come from?

Thank you. I would not say that I am a regular reader, I would like to read more, but for me the books are a magical way to reach new worlds, to travel to interesting places and to feel and experience different things other than my life.

6) Can you tell a bit more about how you started your store?

As I was studying my higher education, I began to work in the real estate sphere, which is quite a different direction, but that is how it happened. I began to develop in this direction and to get more involved in this matter. After 6-7 years in this area I decided that as much as I like my work I want to do something different, with my hands and related to art in some form. So I decided to leave my job without having a clear idea of what I'm going to do. And spontaneously one day while I was stacking at home, I saw the forgotten sewing machine and began to think how I could use it to create something that would give me pleasure that would be useful and practical, and at the same time enjoy people and bring them smiles. So two and a half years ago I started making book covers.

7) How do you select the fabrics you use?

This is a very nice and interesting process and it is always connected to my mood at the moment :) I choose fabrics from local stores that import fabrics from different countries. I buy fabrics only from stores where vendors are courteous, let me choose and mix comfortably for as long as I need it. For me, this is important because when the fabrics are chosen with desire and smile and without any tension, then sewing is more pleasant. I have ordered fabrics over the internet, which gives me a lot more choice of fabrics, but I like it much more when I can see and touch a live fabric. I also keep on high-quality fabrics as they work better, and then the finished product is better.

8) You hand paint some of the book sleeves. How did you come up with this idea?

The painted sleeves are my favorite. Some time ago I tried to paint on clothes and this is something very interesting and different than drawing on paper. The first cover I was painting was when I needed to sew something different but at this point I did not like any of the fabrics I had so I decided to paint one. I wanted to make covers where to express myself more and that's my way to do it. Their charm is that even if something like a shape is drawn, the colors can never be repeated to 100% and each one is unique.

9) What do you like the most about having your own shop?

This is a wonderful thing. I would say it's not easy, it requiers a great self-control because you have to believe and work hard without giving up, this is really difficult sometimes but it worth it. I like the freedom that gives me this. I can work anytime of the day and work only when I have the desire and inspiration, which fortunately is most of the time :)

10) What are your plans for the future?

First of all, I want to keep the joy and satisfaction of this work. Then I would like to devote myself more to the painted covers and they become more than these sewn-on fabrics. I've been thinking about creating my own fabric design, but for the moment I'm keen to keep the drawings entirely hand painted and not print. I also want to be able to create other painted textiles that can be used by a wider range of people, although paper book readers are somewhat special persons.
