Squeeze Play by Aven Ellis - Book Review & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Anniek

After graduating from college Hayley starts her first job at a non-profit organization. She's very proud and is ready to participate in the professional environment of Washington DC. Her brother needed a lot of extra attention and care when he was growing up and as a result Hayley lived her school years in the shadows, but now it's time for her to shine. That doesn't go completely according to plan though. On her first day at work she stops at a coffee shop and accidentally spills her ice coffee on the most handsome man she has ever seen. She gives him her email address, but will he get in touch with her?

Brody is the new catcher of the Washington Soaring Eagles. His life has always been about baseball and he was lucky being an athletic kid, because he didn't do well in school. He has the feeling his twin brother Brady got all the brain cells of the family and that next to him people only see Brody as a dumb athlete. The moment he overhears Hayley talk to her best friend he's interested in her. The fact that she has no idea who he is makes it a lot easier for Brody to connect with her. Will he be brave enough to show Hayley his true colors?

Hayley is a sweet person. She has the idea people only notice her when she's helpful or does things perfectly and has her own personal workbook to help her achieve her goals. Hayley is quirky, funny and really considerate towards others. Sometimes she's so busy making someone else feel good that she completely forgets about herself. It made me smile that Brody likes her just the way she is. They're both caring and kind and I loved how they complete each other right from the start. They have a connection on many levels and their funny banter made me laugh out loud multiple times. I was hoping for them to find the courage to accept themselves and to feel comfortable in their own skins.

Squeeze Play is a sweet and light love story laced with humor. Aven Ellis's characters all have creative and unusual character traits that make them stand out and this makes them unique. I'm a little weird myself and I really like to read about the little things that make people the way they are. I love Aven Ellis's sense of humor and her stories always make me chuckle. If I'm in need of a relaxing read at the end of a long day I know that I can't go wrong with a book by Aven Ellis. I absolutely love her new Washington DC Soaring Eagels series and I can't wait to read more about the amazing characters she undoubtedly will come up with.

If you love reading about beautiful athletes and wonderful quirky women I highly recommend Squeeze Play.

About Aven Ellis

I have always loved to write. I completed my first novel at the age of 15—an angst-driven high school romance (Boy meets girl! Evil girl likes same boy! A deception! Will true love prevail?) Though I truly wanted to be a fiction writer, I also knew it was more practical to pursue a job in the communications field and write fiction on the side. So I went off to Purdue University and earned a degree in communication, writing for The Exponent along the way (apologies to anyone who fought through reading those early attempts at journalism.)

After a stint writing for a community newspaper and a public relations agency, and not enjoying what I was writing at all, I found myself a non-writing job and continued writing at night and on weekends. I completed multiple manuscripts that found a home under my bed. Complete it, print it, stick it in an envelope, and slide it under the bed. It became a routine for me, similar to “Lather.Rinse.Repeat.”

Finally, years later, I wrote Connectivity. I loved this story; I loved writing for William and MK. I became brave enough to share this story with new friends who became equally as passionate about these characters and their journey. I ended up submitting Connectivity to Soul Mate Publishing, and it sold. Soul Mate also allowed me to explore this idea I had about writing a hockey-based series, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I live in the Dallas area with my family. I enjoy clipping out recipes I will never get around to trying, working out, and chatting with friends on social media. I’m a hockey nut and watch as much as humanly possible. I also love shopping and fashion and admit to being obsessed with whatever the Duchess of Cambridge is wearing. In addition to be obsessed with the Duchess, I’m equally obsessed with any show or cookbook featuring Gordon Ramsay.

  1. Squeeze Play sounds like a fun, romantic comedy and a great start in the Washington Soaring Eagles series.

  2. this looks like an easy going summery read - just the thing to escape into!

  3. I loved reading about how you got to where you are now! Not a slam dunk, and twists and turns. This is a cute story, I can relate to Hayley, I think I'm like her. And spilling coffee on a cute guy, hmmm never did that by accident or intentional!

  4. Great review, it sounds awesome!

  5. I love the sound of this one and love the super cute cover too!! I've been reading a lot of dark, fantasy books so it's high time I check out something light and funny like this one.

  6. I had no idea what the title was referring to till I Googled 'squeeze play'. Apparently it "consists of a sacrifice bunt with a runner on third base". Um, still none the wiser, I'm afraid! Ah well, Aven's novel does sound sweet.
