Dating for Keeps by Coleen Kwan - Book Review, Guest Post & Giveaway

Review by Suze

Lily doesn't have much luck when it comes to dating. She doesn't stop trying though and has signed up for a dating website. Her first date makes her feel terrible about herself, but fortunately that day she also meets a handsome contractor, who's now coming to the rescue. Caleb makes sure Lily is all right. There's something between them, but Caleb isn't interested in relationships, so friendship is a better idea if they want to keep in touch.

Lily's father is looking for a partner. Caleb thinks he's the ideal candidate, but can't get an interview. In exchange for dating advice Lily promises to arrange this for him. Caleb will help Lily to find the ideal partner and she will help him with a solid plan to impress her father. This seems like a great deal. However, Caleb secretly doesn't want Lily to date anyone else and Lily dreams about her new friend a lot more than she does about the men she's going out with. Will their arrangement be a success or will it end in heartbreak?

Dating for Keeps is a wonderful romantic story. It's clear from the start that Lily and Caleb are a great match. Lily is smart, quirky and creative and Caleb is kind, hardworking, loyal and stubborn. They have a fabulous click on many levels and seem to really get each other. That made the story incredibly fun. I like it a lot when the love between two people feels inevitable because the main characters truly belong together. Caleb and Lily have many obstacles to overcome though and I couldn't wait to find out if they'd find happiness with each other.

Coleen Kwan has a lovely warm writing style. Dating for Keeps captivated me straight away and I read the story in one sitting. The settings for Lily's dates are terrific, they work really well and I loved their originality and versatility. The result is a dynamic love story with two sweet main characters. I'm a big fan of endearing feelgood stories and Dating for Keeps definitely falls into that category. It's an amazing heartwarming book.

If you love sweet romantic stories you don't want to miss Dating for Keeps.

About Coleen Kwan

I've been a bookworm all my life. At school English was my favorite subject, but for some reason I decided on a career in IT. After many years of programming, I wondered what else there was in life — and discovered writing. I love writing contemporary romance whether it's sweet or sensual.

I live in Sydney with my partner and two children. When I'm not writing I enjoy avoiding housework, eating chocolate, and watching Bob's Burgers and Criminal Minds.

Where do you get your ideas from?
Guest post by Coleen Kwan

Whenever people learn that I’m a fiction writer, they often ask “Where do you get your ideas from?” It’s a great question, and sometimes I wonder myself, especially when I’m out of ideas and everything I think of sounds stale and tired.

So, here are some of the ways in which I get ideas:

1) Reading books. I’m not talking about ‘stealing’ other authors’ ideas, but often, in ways I can’t exactly describe, reading will spark an idea that’s completely unrelated to what I’m reading. The inspiration could be a minor character, a setting, or a piece of dialogue.

2) Song titles. Many song titles are almost mini-stories in themselves eg. You’re Still The One, Always On My Mind, Little Drop of Poison, The Last Goodbye. And listening to music can evoke emotions which leads to the imagination taking over, and ideas developing.

3) People-watching. Or, more specifically, eavesdropping. Especially when you’re waiting at the store or the movies or a sports game. Sometimes you hear such curly things you can’t help thinking “There has to be a good story in there somewhere!”

4) Brain-storming. Sometimes, when the magic isn’t happening, I try to write down every single idea I can think of, no matter how silly. It’s a hit-and-miss method; most often I come back the next day, read what I’ve brain-stormed, and say “What was I thinking?”

5) Daydreaming. In my opinion daydreaming is an underappreciated activity that’s in steep decline because these days everyone’s glued to their smart phones. It’s great being connected wherever you are, but when I’m on a train or bus, I do like a long, contemplative daydream, and I believe it’s beneficial to my imagination, like cultivating the soil in order for seeds (ideas) to germinate.

It’s said that there are only seven basic plots in existence, but it’s in the way they are told that gives true enjoyment to readers. Sometimes it’s hard thinking up fresh new ideas, but I believe they are all around us; they just need to be coaxed out!
