Talented Artist - Annie Cavey from The Literary Tea Company - Interview & Giveaway

The Literary Tea Company
About The Literary Tea Company

The Literary Tea Company is the sister company of Rosie Lea Tea.

In the six years that our parent company has existed, we've sought to come up with innovative and fun ideas for new teas. Following the fantastic demand and feedback that we have received we decided to dedicate an entire company to our love of literary themed tea.

Our highest priority is that all of our loose leaf tea and infusions are of a consistently high quality and a genuinely fair price.

We are proud to say that we are a genuine Artisan tea company, that our tea recipes are unique, hand blended and then hand weighed and packaged by us all within the county of Kent, The Garden of England.

We really care about our product and you our customers, as our blends are bespoke we will always listen to what you are asking for and if it is possible we will try and translate that into a new Rosie Lea blend or simply as a custom order for you, designing a personalised label and even working to come up with a bespoke blend especially for you (minimum order quantity required for personalised blends).

We primarily sell through our online shop as well as carefully selected outlets.

All trade enquiries are welcome as we supply multiple customers throughout the world!

Interview

1) Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

We are based in a small seaside town on the Kent coast in England. The Literary Tea Company is the sister company of Rosie Lea Tea, a small family-run business primarily manned by Julie and Annie (Mum and daughter). In the six years that our parent company has existed, we've sought to come up with innovative and fun ideas for new high quality teas.

Following the fantastic demand and feedback that we have received we decided to dedicate an entire company to our love of literary themed tea. Our highest priority is that all of our loose leaf tea and infusions are of a consistently high quality and a genuinely fair price. We are proud to say that we are a genuine Artisan tea company, that our tea recipes are unique, hand blended and then hand weighed and packaged by us, all within the county of Kent, The Garden of England.

2) What’s the inspiration behind your work?

There are so many wonderful classical authors to choose from! Literary greats that have stood the test of time. We love all things about tea and as avid bookworms we can think of nothing better than to match tea with books. In the words of C. S. Lewis “You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.”

3) Where did you learn how to blend tea?

We learnt to blend teas thanks to amazing training from a British Master Tea Blender, as well as a lot of trial and error on our part!

4) What does your work place look like?

We have a custom-made wooden lodge in our garden, it has huge windows overlooking trees and wildlife, and is a perfect serene setting for our teas to flow, we create, blend and package everything from here.

5) You make bookish tea, where does your love for books come from and how do you choose which stories to turn into tea?

We’ve both been avid readers since an early age and our love of books has only grown as we’ve gotten older. When it comes to selecting authors/novels to turn into tea blends, we have selected some of our personal favourites such as Jules Verne (Author of Twenty Thousand Leagues Under The Sea) and Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. As for the rest of our collection we used our own knowledge of classical literature and suggestions from customers to determine who we would and wouldn’t feature.

6) Can you tell a bit more about how you started your store?

We initially started working with tea in 2012 and after drinking vast amounts of tea while reading books we had a lightbulb moment of, wow why not theme our teas with literary greats? And so The Literary Tea Company was born, it took us over a year to finally get the concept right, but since then we haven’t looked back!

7) How do you combine flavours and stories?

We think about the theme of a book, colours, moods and flavours that may match and go from there, likewise with authors, poets and playwrights we look at their personalities and again try to match the ingredients it with that person.

8) Your package design is amazing and you combine this with gorgeous flavours, how do you match the two and where do the ideas come from?

Thank you! To be honest neither of us are graphic designers but do both have a love for art, not saying that we are artists because we aren’t! However, we do know however when something looks right, so again we try to balance the theme of the novel/author with an image and flavours that work. There have been many pieces of paper and graphic files thrown away before we get it right though!

9) What makes books and tea such a good combination?

There are so many choices of books you could go on forever. Books are a fantastic form of escapism, providing a variety of emotions and worlds for you to experience, and to be honest the same goes for tea. The leaves and the ingredients come from all over the world with vast variations in flavour. They can be soothing, refreshing, exciting or even calming! So pairing an exciting novel with a tea bursting with flavour we believe only heightens the excitement.

10) What are your plans for the future?

The skies the limit! We have so many ideas as to where we could go, but we have to rein ourselves in a little as we would simply run out of time and space. We do however have a Third Edition of 12 teas planned for later this Summer, then onto something a little more macabre as Autumn approaches, so I guess all I can say is watch this space!
