Talented Artist - Amber from Bearlypaper Co - Interview & Giveaway

1) Can you tell our readers a bit about yourself?

Hello! My name is Amber! I am a stay at home mom to a 7 year old dinosaur and a 3 year old wild child. I live in the middle of nowhere on a mountain which fun fact! is where I got the inspiration for my shop name and logo! It’s not unusual to find a bear wandering around the town 😊

2) What’s the inspiration behind your work?

Last year, I had the opportunity to work with a subscription box. I really enjoyed everything that went into the process of building a box and had the chance to work with some incredible vendors. I’ve always been incredibly crafty and being able to interact with vendors from all over the world really inspired me to come up with a fun and whimsical product that everyone could enjoy.

3) Where did you learn how to make designs and to draw?

I actually don’t draw the artwork for the character bookmarks that I offer. I work with some incredible artists who all do such stunning work. I do design the flat bookmarks and quote bookmarks myself. I have also been interested in graphic design and have been able to implement that interest into some of my most recent ideas.

4) What does your work place look like?

Um, do I have to say? Haha…I work from a fold out table in my living room while being surrounding by all sorts of chaos.

5) You make bookish items, where does your love for books come from?

Hmm, this is a tough one. I always loved books as a child, I really got into Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys and Goosebumps. From there it moved to Harry Potter. After that, I sort of lost my way for awhile. I struggled with depression and gave up on doing things like reading. I ended up having to move away from everything I had known and restart my life. Last year, I ordered my first OwlCrate box. The book in it, was Caraval by Stephanie Garber. It really ignited my love for reading again!

6) Can you tell a bit more about how you started your store?

I’ve known about Etsy for a long time. It was always a go-to for subscriptions boxes to find interesting products from vendors, so that was a no brainer for me to start my shop on that platform. I believe I started my shop in November or December of last year and I was so nervous I would not have any sales. There is quite a bit of competition on Etsy.

7) You make a lot of quote inspired items, how do you find the quotes and how do you turn them into a beautiful item?

For the quote bookmarks, it’s really a mixture. I pay close attention to books that are well liked and try to use some quotes from not only those books, but books that mean a lot to me personally as well. In terms of designing an item, it’s a give or take. Some days, I have these great ideas and can execute them really well, and other days the designs are a complete flop and I just can’t get them to look like what I am envisioning in my head.

8) Materials are important to you, how do you select them?

Oh my goodness. I don’t even want to get into this craziness haha! When it comes to my bookmarks, I am a perfectionist. I spent so much money testing all sorts of different papers, cardstock, matte, gloss. I bought 2 different printers and I spent a lot of time trying out different magnets until I found products that I felt happy with and could be brought together to make a product I was proud to share.

9) Do you design when you’re reading or do you finish a story first and design later and how do you know if a story is suitable for products?

It depends really. Some of my bookmarks are from books I have personally read or from movies that stood out to me, and some are characters that others mentioned they would like to see, or requested. Many times I’ll include bookmarks from popular fandoms that I may not directly be interested in, but I know others will be.

10) What are your plans for the future?

That’s a good question! I’m actually not quite sure at the moment. I’d love to find myself working with some bookstores, maybe even Barnes and Noble one day! I’d also love to do a convention event. I think it would be really inspiring and exciting to be part of something like that.

  13. Wow, these items are amazing. Took three hours to pick one from the "shop" as one of the requirements as they are all gorgeous. The bookmarks are amazing, a bit different from the dog biscuit I used one day as Doni (my labrador cross rottie) decided it was time his walk and I hadn't a bookmark to hand. Was told from an early age NOT TO FOLD THE CORNERS so have had a random selection over the year. Would be amazing to win one of these though and definitely make sure it doesn't get left in a library book when I return them.
