In Shining Armor by Blair Babylon - Book Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Anniek

Flicka needs to get to Paris to file for her divorce as soon as possible. After being violated by her husband Pierre, the Prince of Monaco, she doesn't want to have anything to do with him anymore. Flicka escaped from him and his secret service officers and ran to the only person she trusts with her life, Dieter. Dieter is her shield and would do anything to keep her safe. Flicka did what she thought was right when she married Pierre, but she couldn't have been more wrong. Will Flicka make it to Paris, so she can consult her lawyers?

Flicka is in great danger now that she's on the run. Pierre will stop at nothing to get her back to Monaco. To keep his rights to the throne he needs to produce a legal heir. He desperately needs Flicka and tries to force her to agree. Flicka has grown up surrounded by wealth and is accustomed to the best money can buy. She was raised by her brother, who protected her as well as he could. She has no idea how the world works for normal people and she has to adjust quickly. She has no passport, clothes or money, because she left it all when she fled from her hotel room. Dieter and his employers of Rogue Security need to come up with a plan to get her under the radar for as long as possible. Can Dieter keep Flicka safe long enough to get the divorce finalized?

In Shining Armor is the second book in the Runaway Princess series. Flicka is a sensitive, beautiful young woman who made choices for all the wrong reasons and therefore she needs help. She has known Dieter since she was just a child. Flicka seems helpless from time to time, but she has proven to have more strength than I initially gave her credit for. I loved to read more about her and I connected with her straight away when I read Once Upon a Time. That didn't change when reading In Shining Armor, which is something I enjoyed a lot. Flicka is used to have privileges and can get a bit uncertain when she has to travel like everyone else. Many regular things are unknown to her, but the way she handles every new challenge is admirable. I am rooting for her to stay safe, so she can let true love in.

Blair Babylon's writing style kept me on the edge of my seat the entire time I was reading In Shining Armor. The book is filled with descriptions of life as a royal, the good and the bad. I loved that it also shows how vulnerable people at court really are. They'll need around the clock protection to remain safe wherever they go. Even when they're in the safety of their own homes, bodyguards are always around. It must be suffocating to live like this, but Flicka and her brother accept it as part of their lives. Flicka and her brother always stand together and are very close. I love to read books about strong family bonds that come to life incredibly well. They give me a warm feeling, because I share the same with my family. In Shining Armor is a fast-paced story filled with danger, intriguing royal families and secrets that are meant to stay hidden, but come to the surface anyway. I fell in love with the Runaway Princess series ever since I read the first book, Once Upon a Time, and am eagerly waiting to read more about Flicka's adventures.

If you love to read stories about royal families, secrets and dangerous encounters In Shining Armor would be a perfect choice. Please keep in mind that this book is the second book in the Runaway Princess series. I'd advise you to start with the first book when reading Flicka's story. Keep in mind that there's an open ending and that the story will continue in the next book, In A Faraway Land.

About Blair Babylon

Blair Babylon is the nom de plume of an award-winning, USA Today-bestselling author who used to publish literary fiction. Because professional reviews of her other fiction usually included the caveat that there was too much deviant sex and too much interesting plot, she decided to abandon all literary pretensions, let her freak flag fly, and write hot, sexy, erotic romance, plus wild, suspenseful thrillers, science fiction, and urban fantasy using the super-secret pen name Blair C. Babylon.

When Dieter Schwarz dragged himself into Wulfie’s Kensington Palace apartment that fine summer day, his ash blond hair was so short that he must have shaved his head recently, as it was about the same length as his scruffy beard. He had one black eye and scabbed-over scrapes covering half his handsome face, and one of his muscular arms hung in a sling.

His gray eyes held a feral savageness that looked like he would pick up a rare steak, bite into it with his teeth, and rip it apart while he devoured it.

Oddly, Flicka wanted to be the steak.

Dieter dumped his only luggage, a small rucksack, on the floor.

Wulfram looked up from the book he was reading. “Good week?”

“The best,” Dieter answered.

From the growl in Dieter’s voice, Flicka could hear that his body still coursed with adrenaline, even though he must have flown home from wherever on a plane for hours.

He shucked his overshirt and stretched, standing in a tank top in the entryway. The sling on his arm fell aside, and he flinched when he rolled that shoulder to loosen it.

Flicka couldn’t look away from the way Dieter’s round muscles stood out from his arms and shoulders, thick cords and hard bulges that were so different from the sinewy or stocky teenagers she had been living with at Le Rosey. When Dieter moved his arms, stretching out kinks, those muscles flexed and moved under his tanned and sunburned skin. The golden fuzz that covered the top of his chest above his tank top looked soft, and Flicka could think of nothing else but the way it would feel against her palms.

Dieter asked. “How were the royal bodyguards, Wulfram?”

“Adequate,” Wulfram answered.

“I suppose that’s okay.”

Dieter leaned over and picked up his rucksack.

When he did, the muscles under the thin cotton of his tank top stood out in lumps that Flicka could count. His webbed belt kept his black fatigue pants up, she surmised, because his hips were slim. He looked like could have won any athletic event or beaten any other man on Earth in hand-to-hand combat.

Flicka couldn’t breathe.

She longed to walk over to Dieter and touch his arms and his chest. She bet that he was warm to the touch, with all those muscles working right under his skin like that. His skin must be silky, or coarse—yes, coarse—and his hands would probably feel callused and rough on her arms.

A flush ran over her, a warmth that made her feel heavy and weak.

Dieter had his backpack in his large, strong hands, and he was looking right at her. His dark gray eyes settled on her skin, and she could almost feel his gaze. “Good to see you, Durchlauchtig.”

Her breath seemed to have leaked out of her lungs, and she had to suck in some air to answer him. “You, too, Lieblingwächter.”

Dieter walked out of the room, stalking like a tiger.

The white album of Flicka’s music school musings slipped from her arms and crashed on the floor.

Wulfram looked up from his book, one eyebrow raised.

Flicka told him, “I’m going to attend the Royal Academy, here in London.”

“Excellent,” Wulfram said, settling back into his book. “You can live here at Kensington with me. Security will be easier with you in London, too.”

Yes, she was counting on it.
