Tess and Tattoos by H.A. Leuschel - Book Review & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Suze

Tess is an eighty-two-year-old woman living in a care home. She's lonely and nobody ever comes to visit her. Tess's son lives in Australia and even though they call each other regularly, they haven't seen one another in years. Tess's life hasn't been easy and she still has so much to say. When Sandra starts working at the home, there's finally someone who listens. Sandra is more than just Tess's carer, she likes the older woman and they become friends. Tess is no longer all alone, but what is she hiding?

Tess and Tattoos is a beautiful story. I was immediately intrigued by Tess. She's a woman with a past and it's clear a lot has happened to her. She doesn't have anybody and the kind Sandra is exactly what she needs. Their friendship is impressive and because of Sandra Tess finally starts to open up. I was moved to tears by her story. Tess and Tattoos is poignant and compelling and H.A. Leuschel kept me glued to the pages.

H.A. Leuschel knows exactly how to describe emotions. She doesn't need many pages to tell a complete story, which is a skill I admire. I could easily picture Tess, the home she's living in and the wonderful Sandra. There's a fabulous element of suspense as well because of the life Tess used to live. I was eager to keep reading and loved every single page of the story. Tess and Tattoos is a mesmerizing novella that I couldn't put down.

Advice

  8. The story of Tess sounds amazing. So many of the elderly have led amazing lives and have great stories if we just listen to them. :)

  10. Sounds great, but what I am mostly intruiged is that she doesn't need many pages to tell a complete story, which is a skill, yes. And I'd love to see it for myself.

  13. Not only does "Tess and Tattoos" sound like an absorbing read, I'm glad (is that the word I want to use?) to see a main character of superior (that definitely is the right word) age-- and a woman, in particular.
It both saddens and annoys me that I should be pointing this out. Were this a YA novella, I wouldn't be commenting on how nice it is to have some representation from the young teenage set. Those who are elderly (or disabled, or, or...) are, in my opinion, largely absent or unseen. This seems like something of a mirror to me, in popular literature in general.
I'm looking at "Manipulated Lives" on Amazon right now, and it seems beautiful. Thank you to the author for the lives; thank you to Suze for the lovely review.

  15. I have only read a few books where the main character is elderly, however I've loved all of them. I'd really like to read this one and see how it matches up.
