Soul Catchers by Carrie Pulkinen - Book Review, Interview & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Suze

In Wren's world magic is forbidden and she has to hide her powers to stay alive. If the government would discover what she can do, they'd kill her or lock her up in a facility where she has to face a fate worse than death. Wren's mother is a healer who uses her powers in secret and she always makes sure Wren is protected against illnesses and wolves. However, on the one day Wren forgets her talismans, a wolf attacks and tries to kill her mother. Wren doesn't hesitate and uses her abilities to defend her mother. This exposes her and she immediately becomes a target. To make it even worse, she's killed the wolf, which means the animal's spirit will now possess her. Wren will become a dangerous monster at night. Is there a cure for this curse and will she be able to stay out of the hands of her enemies long enough to find it?

Liam was supposed to watch the wolf that attacked Wren's mother. He now feels responsible for the girl that harbors the spirit. The wolf is angry and difficult to control, but Liam believes in Wren's strength. He has to convince the girl he once landed in a large amount of trouble when they were younger to trust him. If there's a solution, Liam will help Wren find it. Will she give him a chance? What will happen when she changes at night, can Liam and Wren keep themselves and others safe until they've found a solution?

Soul Catchers is a gripping romantic story. Wren is a sweet girl. She's afraid of her powers and never uses them, so she won't be arrested. She's traumatized and wants to be normal, which is a shame because she's such a talented girl. She's beautiful inside and out. Wren ends up with the spirit of a dangerous wolf inside her and I was curious to find out where that would lead. Liam is trying to look after her, but the wolf is resourceful and wants to kill. There's such a huge difference between the kindhearted Wren and the evil wolf and that contrast was fabulous to read about. Liam perfectly understands Wren and the issues she's dealing with. This makes them form a close connection. I loved their gorgeous bond and was anxious to find out where it would lead. They don't have much time to explore their feelings, because there's a mission they have to accomplish. Their journey is adventurous and eventful and this kept me on the edge of my seat.

Carrie Pulkinen combines magic with suspense and romance in a fantastic way. I was immediately enchanted by her story. I loved her world building skills. Her detailed descriptions are making her story come to life in an incredible manner. I loved the special powers she writes about and the evil plots the government has created to deal with those who have them kept me glued to the pages. Carrie Pulkinen has written a fast-paced rollercoaster of a story. Soul Catchers is a terrific captivating book about true love, being who you're supposed to be and special skills. I highly recommend this amazing book.

Advice

If you love fantasy combined with romance you will definitely like Soul Catchers.

About Carrie Pulkinen

I’ve always been fascinated with the paranormal. Of course, when you grow up next door to a cemetery, the dead (and the undead) are hard to ignore. Pair that with my love of a good happily-ever-after, and becoming a paranormal author seems like the logical choice! I love ghosts, psychics, werewolves, vampires, demons, and even the occasional guardian angel. If it’s paranormal, I’ve probably written about it…or at least considered writing about it.

In my past life, I was a high school journalism teacher. But after ten years of teaching other people how to write, I decided to stay home with my kids and write my own stories in my free time. When I’m not writing or reading books about writing, you’ll find me reading paranormal romances, thrillers, romantic suspense, YA, and middle grade fantasy (I have a teen and a tween who love to read. It’s fun to discuss books with them!).

I love red wine and chocolate, and I can make a mean mojito. I like movies, I’m passionate about traveling, and I might have a mild Dave and Buster’s addiction. I’m married to a tall sexy Dutch guy with piercing blue eyes and a swoon-worthy accent. He also shares my enthusiasm for D&B! In addition to my two human children, I also have two fur babies who swear they’re chihuahuas (but at 11 & 17 pounds respectively, I’m not so sure).

Interview

1) Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?

I'm a mom, wife, and author living in Houston, Texas. Soul Catchers is my first venture into the YA genre, and it was so much fun to write!

2) Can you describe the main characters of Soul Catchers in eight words each?

Wren: Determined teen who loses everything to find herself.

Liam: He's not your average brooding young adult hero.

3) Wren lives in a world where magic is forbidden, how did you get the idea for this?

My original basis for the story was to play on the "What if Little Red Riding Hood were the wolf?" theme. And in order for her to become the wolf, there had to be magic involved. Throw her into a dystopian setting, and it just made sense for magic to be illegal to go along with all the other issues in their society.

4) You lived next to a cemetery. How was that and how does it influence your stories?

I learned about death at a young age, and people's beliefs in the afterlife have always fascinated me. Most of my stories involve ghosts, angels, or some form of spirit life, because I like exploring all the possibilities of life after death.

5) Where does your love for fantasy come from?

When I read, I like to escape from real life and think about things that could never happen, so I try to incorporate some kind of magic or paranormal elements into all my stories.

6) If you could be a Sense yourself, what would it be and why?

The Sense manifests differently in each individual, but I think Liam's healing ability would be an awesome gift to have. Telekinesis would be fun too, though.

7) You love romance. Where does your passion for this subject come from and what does true love mean to you?

I've always been a sucker for a good happily ever after. I find that when I read, I'm usually disappointed if there isn't at least a little romance thrown into the story. Of course, most romantic stories are about the first-kiss, magical whirlwind of emotions involved in the beginning of a relationship. True love, though, is on a much deeper level and involves patience, commitment, and honesty that lasts a lifetime.

8) You love sharing stories with your children, how did your own love for books start and how did you inspire them to read?

I actually didn't learn to love reading until I was well into my adulthood. I thought I didn't like reading when I was a kid, but it turned out I just didn't like the books that we were assigned to read in school. When I had kids of my own, I read to them every day, from all different genres so they could find something they liked. Lucky for me, both my kids love fantasy and magic as much as I do!

9) You love traveling, what was your most memorable experience?

Before we got married, my husband had an apartment in Italy. We spent two weeks there one summer, and I got to see the area from a local's perspective rather than going on tours. It was a magical, eye-opening experience.

10) As your husband is Dutch, have you ever been to the Netherlands and if so, what’s your favorite place to visit there?

Yes, I have visited the Netherlands several times, as his family still lives there. I love Amsterdam, but my favorite place to visit is Schagen, the town where his family lives. It's such a quaint little town with a nice square and lovely scenery. It's gezellig! ;)

11) What are your plans for the future?

I'm currently working on an adult werewolf paranormal romance series, but as soon as that's done, I've got some ideas for a few more YA books!

  1. Soul Catchers sounds like it combines a little fairy tale, Native American folklore and a lot of creative world building. It could be the start to a very addictive series.
