I like that the story is not or wild or frantic which enables more emphasis on plot and character development. Also, because they're usually set in small villages or towns with ordinary, everyday characters, you can relate to them.
"What do you like the most about stories set in small towns and why?" Well, I once read "Appointment In Samarra" by John O'Hara, and it was rather disappointing. But I did expect all the same bells and whistles and excitement that I would get in any setting. The super-literary-sounding title promised excitement and sophistication, but instead it was a wan story of small-town infidelity.
(Elizabeth Matthiesen) In a small town setting or a village people tend to know everyone and so it's much easier to 'see' the places and people mentioned in the novel. That's also the reason that I like novels set in areas that I know well, it makes you feel more involved.
I have lived in small towns most of my life (we're talking from 36 people to about 1000) and I like a story that relates to what I'm familiar with. (all the sayings about small towns are true lol)
OmG, stories about small towns are my favorite kind of stories. There's something about the town describing that makes a reader attached to the place, and also, you get to know the caracters and care about them. I read books by both of these authors and I love their work.
I enjoy that you get to know all the characters and places in the story intimately, there is also something very impactful about tragedy or mystery in a small town as every character feels it.
