Where I Found You by Heidi R. Kling - Book Review & Interview

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Suze

Seventeen-year-old Sienna doesn't want to come near the water anymore. Her mother's plane went missing while flying over the ocean and Sienna hasn't been able to enjoy anything that has to do with the sea since it happened. Sienna stays in the background, desperately trying to keep things safe. However, her father, a well known psychiatrist, has other plans for his daughter. He's offering her a trip, they will both travel to Indonesia to work with tsunami victims. This means Sienna has to get over her fears to be able to go on a journey of a lifetime.

When she arrives in Indonesia Sienna is shocked about the differences between life at the orphanage she's working at and her life at home. The children there have lost so much and loss is something she understands well. Can Sienna learn something from them while they also learn from her? She meets Deni, a boy who brings back some of her old spirit. Deni never gives up and is always looking out for others. He's a born leader, but he's also hiding something. Will Sienna have the chance to find out his secrets and what will be the consequences if she does?

Where I Found You is a beautiful story about loss, falling in love and living. I loved Heidi R. Kling's gorgeous descriptions of Sienna's journey, both physically and spiritually. In the short time she's at the orphanage she's growing up quickly. She starts to understand herself, she learns how to deal with her heartbreak and she finds her courage again. I loved seeing that transition. She's a sweet girl with so many talents and it was nice to see more of her headstrong side. Deni brings out the best in Sienna. I liked his kind nature, his air of mystery and his adventurous streak. Deni and Sienna have a stunning meaningful connection and I really enjoyed reading about their experiences.

Heidi R. Kling has written an amazing story with a fantastic ending that moved me to tears. I loved the layers in her characters' personalities. They are interesting and well developed. She writes about Indonesia in a fantastic vivid way that makes the surroundings come to life incredibly well. I liked the combination of a meaningful goal with an emotional love story, something she's perfectly executed. Where I Found You is an incredibly impressive story, I absolutely loved this mesmerizing book.

If you love beautiful emotional love stories you should definitely read Where I Found You.

1) Can you tell a bit about yourself?

I started writing stories when I was very young and wrote my first novel when I was sixteen. It's still in a binder! I live on the California coast, in a tiny beach town, with my husband and two kids and dog Sailor.

2) Could you describe the main characters of Where I Found You in six words each?

Deni: charismatic, brave, kind, passionate, mysterious, talented
Sienna: loyal, loving, afraid, funny, passionate, risky

3) What inspired you to write about the Indonesian tsunami?

My husband volunteered in Indonesia after the tsunami to help real orphans with their PTSD (Post-traumatic stress disorder.) His experiences there inspired this novel.

4) Love can be found in the most unexpected circumstances, what do you like the most about writing about this subject?

Exactly that! You never know which mountain love is lurking behind.

5) What are your plans for the future?

To write my books. To play with my kids. To watch every sunset I can. To take risks. To embrace life.

Thanks for having me!

:) Heidi
