Lost in Static by Christina Philippou - Book Review, Interview & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Anniek

Ruby, Juliette, Yasmine and Callum start their freshman year at university. They all live in the same hall. They each have their own secrets, insecurities and experiences. When a horrific incident happens Ruby, Juliette, Yasmine and Callum tell their side of the story, the moments that led up to one of them falling down the stairs. Four stories, one truth. Who will you believe after you know all the information?

Ruby is a girl who loves to play sports. She's very social, but also has an insecure side. She's in love with Callum and gets into arguments with Yasmine regularly. Ruby is a great friend and is good at keeping secrets.

Juliette comes from a religous home and has an awfully controlling mother. She goes to church, but lately she's been struggling with her feelings about faith. Juliette has fallen in love, only choosing the partner she wants to be with will clash with her believes.

Yasmine has a secret 'hobby' that no one knows about. She's manipulative and wants Callum for her own. Yasmine won't back down from playing dirty tricks to break up the relationship he has with Ruby. Yasmine can put up a great act which makes people like her immediately.

Callum has a famous father and mother. He's hiding a big family secret and came to college hoping to stay under the radar. He loves Ruby, but he can't always cope with her decisions. Callum sees the good in people and sometimes jumps to conclusions without knowing all the facts.

Lost in Static is a gripping read about new relationships and secrets. I loved the fact that the main characters each get to tell the story from their point of view. It felt like they were confessing it to me personally. Christina Philippou has picked a great setting for Lost in Static, which made her story come to life incredibly well. I loved the drama and the characters felt so real that I instantly connected with some of them and disliked others from the start. Even though Christina Philippou alternates between main characters Lost in Static still has an easy to follow storyline. Everything blends perfectly together. Lost in Static is Christina Philippou's debut novel and I can hardly believe that this is her first published book. I definitely hope she'll be writing more brilliant stories.

2. What does a typical day look like for you?

Hectic! I have three little ones, a full-time job, and my writing...

3. If you could choose to be a character from Lost in Static for one day, who would you choose and why?

I'd actually love to be Yasmine! I spend so much of my life doing things for others that it would be genuinely interesting to be a selfish self-centred individual for a day!

4. What was your inspiration for Lost in Static?

My husband and I had a ‘disagreement’ over how we got together, and then a few days later, I was talking to a friend about an event we had both attended and realised that she and I had completely different interpretations of it. It got me thinking about how easy it is to misunderstand people’s actions when we’re not in their heads, but also how differently everyone sees the same events. And so Lost in Static was born.

5. Do you have a specific writing routine?

Write when I can - sometimes religiously, sometimes nothing for weeks at a time...

6. Do you have a favorite quote?

One of my friends once defended herself by saying "I didn't do anything! Things just happened around and to me!" It has really stuck with me as a hilarious and, at the same time, poignant way of looking at life's embarassing moments!

7. What's your advice for other aspiring writers?

Just write for yourself - what you enjoy, what you want to write about, how you want to write. That's how the best writing comes out.

8. You have your own blog. What do you like the most about blogging?

I love books and I love sharing this love - which is why I took up blogging in the first place...

9. What are your plans for the future?

I have just finished writing my second book (which is slightly darker), so watch this space!
