Book Review - A Cut Above by Millie Gray

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Suze

It's 1962 and Freda and her high school friends all like the same boy, Ethan. Ethan is kind and handsome, but he is focused and driven and has clear career goals. Does he also like one of them back? Freda knows what she wants to do with her life. She and her best friend Robin start training to be hairdressers straight after school. They're both talented and soon they have a successful business. However, Freda's good fortune doesn't last. A brutal attack changes her life forever. Fortunately her best friends Hannah and Robin are there to help her get through the worst time in her life.

Because of what happened to her Freda has to make life changing decisions and she has to do this quickly. Robin is by her side the whole time, he's there for her when she needs him the most. Ethan doesn't have that opportunity, Freda wasn't even aware she'd have a chance with him, but when she finds out she feels it might be too late. There are many people who are depending on her, can she give in to her feelings or should she hide them because it will hurt others if she follows her heart? What will the future bring for Freda?

A Cut Above is a fantastic moving story about love, friendship, tragedy and being there for one another. I absolutely loved the main characters, their friendship is deep, real and unique. Freda is such a kindhearted person. She's always taking care of others and when she needs them the most her friends are there for her, which was wonderful to see. Her life is complicated, but it's filled with warmth, which is a beautiful thing. I equally loved reading about Freda, Hannah, Robin and Ethan. They are interesting and likable and I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough to find out what would happen to them.

Millie Gray's writing has a great easy flow. She's written a gorgeous fast-paced story filled with unexpected twists and turns. I loved how she makes her story come to life by adding the exact right details. I enjoyed picturing life in the 1960s and admired how genuine the descriptions felt. A Cut Above is an emotional story that both made me smile and moved me to tears. The ending is surprising, but fitting. I didn't want Millie Gray's charming story to end and definitely loved this amazing book.

If you love beautiful emotional stories about friendship and love in different forms you should definitely read A Cut Above.
