With Love For Romantic Books - A Perfect Plan by Alyssa Drake - Book Review, Interview & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Anniek

Sam has lived a fairly sheltered life on her family's estate in the country. She has been kept away from the drama and gossip that's part of the society crowd in London. After the death of her brother, Edward, Sam moves in with her sister-in-law, Wilhelmina, and her three daughters. Wilhelmina introduces her into society and is determined to find a suitable husband for Sam. Sam has no intentions of getting married and will do whatever she can to prevent men from officially courting her. That is until she meets Lord Benjamin Westwood, again. They once had an encounter when Sam was still very young. Will Benjamin be the one man who can change her mind about marriage?

Benjamin and Edward, have been best friends for a long time. When Edward asks Benjamin to act as Sam's guardian if something would happen to him of course Benjamin says yes. Benjamin never expected to take over this duty from his friend. After meeting Sam and seeing the beautiful woman she's turned into, Benjamin can't stand the thought of another man touching her. He can't stop thinking about her, even though she drives him mad on several occasions. When Edward turns up on Benjamin's doorstep alive it turns out that Edward has been investigating the death of his father. His father was murdered and now the whole family is in danger. In a desperate attempt to keep her safe Benjamin proposes to Sam himself. How long will it take before Sam finds out how he truly feels about her?

Sam is a feisty young woman. She has a mind of her own and will not let herself be pressured into anything, especially not following the strict rules that society lays upon women. Sam is incredibly smart, she's an educated woman and she has been taking good care of the financial part of their estate. I loved how Edward has taken the time to teach her everything he knows. Sam is trained in a lot of things that aren't considered appropriate for a woman of her standing. Edward and Sam are really close, just as I am with my own brother. This made is easy for me to connect to the story. Sam is hotheaded, but also innocent at the same time. I loved those layers in her character.

Benjamin doesn't have a good reputation when it comes to the ladies. To keep his title he has to marry and conceive an heir before he turns thirty. He has to find a suitable wife soon. Benjamin is a loving son and brother and he's loyal to his friend Edward too. Benjamin takes his duty as a guardian seriously. It shows him what he didn't dare to see so many years ago. Sam is the love of his life and he feels that the moment he sees her again. Benjamin is a strong man, who doesn't appreciate women who would just follow his lead. I was laughing out loud when I was reading about his thoughts of some of the people he meets. Any woman would be lucky to have him as a husband, since she'll be treated with love and respect, which is what I liked the most about his personality.

A Perfect Plan is a great story about how love will find you when you least expect it. The story holds a great mystery as well. This mystery is where the danger that Sam's family is in comes from and I was anxious to find out who the villain behind it would be. I love it when a historical romance story feels genuine. Alyssa Drake almost literally takes you back in time with her vivid descriptions and intriguing characters. Even though she uses the language that is appropriate for the era she writes about, I flew through the pages. A Perfect Plan was my first book by Alyssa Drake, but I can tell you that I'll be reading the next book in this series with no hesitation as soon as I can.

If you love to read historical romance mixed with a good mystery and many unexpected twists and turns, I think you'll definitely like A Perfect Plan.

About Alyssa Drake

Author Alyssa Drake has been creating stories since she could read, preferring to construct her own bedtime tales instead of reading the titles in her bookshelves. Enraptured with all types of writing, Alyssa has tried her hand at short stories, collaborations and poetry. However, her first love has always been books. She thoroughly enjoys strong heroines and often laughs aloud when visualizing conversations between her characters.

Alyssa graduated from the University of the Pacific, with a B.S. in business and a concentration in French literature. Currently she resides in Northern California with her blended family, where she works full-time at a chocolate factory.

She believes everyone is motivated by love of someone or something. One of her favorite diversions is fabricating stories about strangers surrounding her on public transportation. Alyssa can often be found madly scribbling notes on a train or daydreaming out the window as the scenery whips past.

An Imperfect Engagement, Alyssa' sophomore novel, is the follow-up to her debut novel, A Perfect Plan (which won Obsessed by Book's 2016 Indie Award for Best Historical Read). Both novels are historical romantic suspense (love and murder in 1850's England).

Alyssa is expanding into Paranormal/Fairytale romance and has three upcoming anthologies in that genre.

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
I have been writing ever since I was a child, which was more a hobby than an actual job. My mom was subjected to endless short stories; which is amusing because she now helps edit. My scribbling became more concentrated when I moved to the opposite side of the bay - I live in Northern California with my (new) husband, three kids and one fur baby. With the increased commute time, I wanted a way to entertain myself while riding on the train. Mirroring the Amtrak Author Residency program, I began writing during my commute. I love the concept of uninterrupted writing. It allows creativity to flow along with the subtle clack of train wheels. My “normal” job is an executive assistant at a chocolate factory – yes, my job is sweet.

2. What makes your heart beat faster?

I love the seduction, the part in a story before the characters hook up. That growing tension between the two characters is my favorite part.

3. If you could create the perfect romantic day what would it look like?
My perfect romantic day involves waking up late (with perfect hair), having a beach picnic, shower time, quiet candlelight dinner, a walk under the stars, drinks in a hot tub and then ……

4. Who is your favorite romantic couple?
My favorite romantic couple is Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy. I adore how realistically they are portrayed. Neither person is perfect; yet together they are a perfect match. “You must allow me to tell you how ardently I admire and love you.” Sigh.

5. Could you describe what  romance means to you?

Romance is an emotional connection to someone that cannot be explained or reasoned away. It is a river which we are delightfully carried away upon, not knowing where you will end up or how the journey will end.

6. Do you find it difficult to write about romance?

There are so many aspects of romance, that I usually do not have any difficulty writing about love. I cannot always write about the same characters thought (sometimes they refuse to talk to me and I end up working on a different story, which is better than when they are all speaking at the same time).

7. Can you tell us about your most romantic experience?

The most romantic experience I had was my wedding proposal. My finance took me to the beach with our three kids on Mother’s day. The kids were playing in the water and I was happily watching them, when I heard a voice behind me. I spun around and he was holding out a white box. He looked so nervous when he opened the box. It turns out, everyone was in on it. The kids and our families already knew he was proposing - I was the only one in the dark.

8. What kind of music do you like to listen to when you're in a romantic mood?

I listen to Barry White, Marvin Gaye and Lionel Richie. I get chills every time I hear one of their voices.

9. Which country personifies romance for you and why?

Interestingly I think England is one of the most romantic countries. I envision lush countryside, beautiful cottages and sexy accents (that’s the American in me). Plus all of my favorite literary couples are English.

10. What can we expect from you in the future?

I currently have several projects up my sleeve. An Imperfect Engagement, the follow up to A Perfect Plan has been released April 21st. I am currently working on A Perfect Deception –this is Thomas’ story and the conclusion to the murder mystery….maybe. A romance for an anthology of fractured fairytales. I am honored to be included in the book alongside so many exceptional authors. Look for my tale – The Frog Prince - along with nine other romantic stories September 2017. Lastly, I have a paranormal romance which is slowly developing into a series. My newest book boyfriend, Sebastian, is a playboy who has falls under the spell of true love.
