Reading in the Sun - Interview with Erin Rhew & Giveaway

About Erin Rhew

Erin Rhew is an editor, operations manager for a small press, and the author of The Fulfillment Series. Since she picked up Morris the Moose Goes to School at age four, she has been infatuated with the written word. She went on to work as a grammar and writing tutor in college and is still teased by her family and friends for being a member of the "Grammar Police."

A Southern girl by blood and birth, Erin spent years in a rainy pocket of the Pacific Northwest before returning to her roots in the land of hushpuppies, sweet tea, and pig pickin’. She’s married to fellow author, the amazingly talented (and totally handsome) Deek Rhew, and spends her time writing side-by-side with him under the watchful eye of their patient-as-a-saint writing assistant, a tabby cat named Trinity. Erin and Deek enjoy taking long walks, drinking coffee, lifting, boxing, eating pizza, staying up late into the night talking, and adventuring together.

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I'm a Southerner by birth and blood but spent a few years exploring the Pacific Northwest. Now, I'm back in my home state and enjoying the time with family and friends. I'm blessed to be married to my best friend and fellow author, Deek Rhew. Together, we enjoy reading aloud to one another, running, lifting, boxing, eating chocolate, and writing side-by-side.

2. What kind of books do you bring with you when you go on holiday?

When I go on vacation, I usually bring some sort of YA book. I am especially drawn to the fantasy, sci-fi, mythology, and dystopian genres. Right now, when I'm hanging out by the pool near our house, I've got the Lunar Chronicles series with me.

3. If you could spend a sunny day anywhere how would your perfect day look like?

My perfect sunny day would take place in the Caribbean. I love warm beaches. After my years in the Pacific Northwest, which sports REALLY cold beaches, I'm even more appreciative of a warm one. I love the feel of the sun on my skin, the smell of sunscreen, and the sensation of dipping in the water to cool off. On my perfect day, I'd be sitting with Deek in a hammock beside the ocean, sipping a cold soda and soaking up the sea air.

4. Could you tell us about your hobbies (when you are not writing or reading)?

When I'm not reading and writing, I can usually be found working out (I especially love boxing), spending time with my friends and family, and going on long walks with my husband.

5. Where do you find the inspiration for your stories?

I find inspiration in all areas of life--my own experiences, the experiences of those close to me, world events, reading, adventuring, exploring, observing human nature. My Shakespeare professor in college once told me that Shakespeare had to have been a master at people-watching. So, I try to emulate the great bard.

6. If you could be any leading character from a bestselling book, who would you be and why?

Oh wow. I think I'd choose to be Annabeth Chase from the Percy Jackson series. I love the whole mythological world and the adventures they go on. I also have a huge literary crush on Percy, so I'd get to be his girlfriend if I were Annabeth. LOL!

7. What's your favorite reading spot?

I love to read in my bed, by the pool, or in the bathtub.

8. What is your favorite holiday destination and what do you like so much about it?

One of my favorite vacation destinations is Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It's called the "Las Vegas of the South" because there are tons of things to do. But unlike Vegas, it's on the beach. So, you can go see shows, participate in a lot of events and adventures, but you always have the beach to hang out on as well. Deek and I just got back from a mini-vacation there, and I loved every minute of it.

9. Do you have any advice for authors who would like to write a sunny story?

My two biggest pieces of advice: edit, edit, edit (and when you think you're done, edit some more) and never give up.

10. What can we expect from you in the future?

I currently have an adult historical fiction out with several agents, so I'm hoping for good news with that. Since Deek and I just moved, my creative juices haven't been flowing as freely, but I hope to get to work soon on my futuristic thriller and a new fantasy novel.

    1. It's a BLAST!! :) I hope you get to go sometime!

  3. Great advice for authors - I wish more would take this to heart (nothing worse than a good story killed by tons of grammar mistakes).

    1. Right? I get in the "go, go, go" mode and want to get it done and get it out in the world. But I have to's got to be right grammar wise too. ;)

  4. I'm a southerner as well! Thanks for the interview! I'm checking out the series now. =]

    1. Yay! Thanks for checking out my series! And "Southern girl fist bump" to ya! :)

  5. I've been to Myrtle Beach several times. It's a lot more busy than it used to be! But they do have the best mini golf courses. Hokey, I know. I just don't have the patience to play regular golf.

    1. Haha! I don't have the patience for regular golf either, Cynthia, and I agree about the rockin' mini golf courses! Myrtle Beach has gotten busier over the years, but I try to go at the beginning of summer before school gets out. Shhhh...that's my secret, but it can't get out too far or other will come! ;)

  6. Great interview Erin and you sound like my sisters they too will read anywhere they can.
