Reading in the Sun - Interview with Delwyn Jenkins & Giveaway

About Delwyn Jenkins

I like radical career changes. After serving in the Australian Navy for ten years (and being exceptionally disciplined) I switched to full-time university Arts student (where getting out of bed before 11am proved traumatic). I’ve worked as a teacher, an editor, and now write full time – a career I plan to stick with for as long as anyone wants to read my stories.

I’m an avid reader and movie-goer, an average bellydancer, and a disinterested cook. I live on the beautiful south-east coast of Australia where the changeable weather suits my mercurial nature.

I also write erotic romance as DJ Michaels.

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I grew up in a small country town and, while I had a happy and social childhood, I was always a city girl at heart. When I left school I joined the Australian Navy where I served for ten years. After that I went to university and where I studied for a Bachelor of Arts (majoring in Literature and History), and after that I studied for a Diploma in Professional Writing and Editing. I worked as a teacher and freelance editor and I wrote on the side (for years and years!). My first book, Called By Fire, was published in 2011 and I've been writing full-time ever since. I live on a beautiful part of the south-east coast of Australia.

2. What kind of books do you bring with you when you go on holiday?

I have an iPad and I'm not afraid to use it! When I go on holiday I take my library with me because I like to be prepared for any reading mood that might strike. During the summer holidays (which coincides with Christmas here in the southern hemisphere) I'll often reread a favourite series - the books that I love, that I can read over and over, and never tire of them.

3. If you could spend a sunny day anywhere how would your perfect day look like?

I grew up near the mountains, so I think a picnic in the bush surrounded by family would be the ideal sunny day. The smell of eucalyptus trees, the call of kookaburras, and maybe even the burble of a small creek. Heavenly.

4. Could you tell us about your hobbies (when you are not writing or reading)?

I'm mad for storytelling so (apart from books) I do love movies and TV series. I'm very social so love to hang out with my friends and family. I like to knit and crochet in winter (which is right now in Australia). I also teach belly dancing at my local community centre (I'm no expert, but what I lack in technique I made up for with love of the art form).

5. Where do you find the inspiration for your stories?

I have a rabidly overactive imagination - seriously, my brain never stops (even at three o'clock in the morning when I'm trying to sleep!). Sometimes my stories will begin with a slither of a scene - like a ten second snippet from a movie. At other times (like my Watchtower Series) the stories will come from an idea. Called By Fire came about because I wanted to do a story that reflected the old religions as they are practiced today. A lot of 'law' and rituals in that series are based on rituals that are still practiced today.

6. If you could be any leading character from a bestselling book, who would you be and why?

Oooh, that's a tough one. I think Eva from the Crossfire Series (by Silvia Day), because I'm madly in love with Gideon Cross.

7. What's your favorite reading spot?

My bed! I know it sounds boring, but I love going to bed early and reading until 'what the hell was I thinking' o'clock in the morning.

8. What is your favorite holiday destination and what do you like so much about it?

Another tough question. If I had to pick just one, Italy would be it. I love the language, the food, the history and the romance. Plus, when men great you with 'Ciao bella' (hello beautiful) as a matter of course, it's hard not to become enamoured.

9. Do you have any advice for authors who would like to write a sunny story?

Write from the heart. Don't worry about what's popular or selling, don't worry about what someone else is writing, and don't try to emulate anyone else. No one else can write your story in your voice, and if you write with love your readers will tap into that and love your books as much as you do.

10. What can we expect from you in the future?

At the moment I'm working on an erotic romance with a sci-fi twist. I'm about halfway through so I'll hopefully have some good news to share by the end of the year - stay tuned.
