Reading in the Sun - Interview with Bridie Blake & Giveaway

About Bridie Blake

I live in Melbourne with a dog, who looks like she’s stepped right out of a Disney movie, and is my faithful companion while I write. Most of the time. The second she gets bored it’s all over.

I come from a large family and have a tribe of nieces and nephews who I love to pieces and I attribute a lot of my active imagination to them!

I’m a coffee addict and if it was my last night on earth I would be asking for seafood. And lots of it! And chocolate. And ice-cream. Ooh and maybe some french toast…

I love musicals and would love to wake up one morning to find everyone breaking into song. The Buffy episode, Once More With Feeling, is pure genius and my dream come true. Minus the demon and people bursting into flames.

My favourite movies include Rent, Annie, The Sound of Music, The Lion King, Beauty and the Beast… I’m sensing a theme here. I also love King Arthur, Harry Potter and Inside Man. TV shows I’m obsessed with at the moment are Nashville, The Blacklist, Modern Family and Chicago PD.

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I live in Melbourne, Australia and am very lucky to have my friends and family live nearby, and even luckier to have my parents (and their fully stocked kitchen) within walking distance. I work five days a week in an office job and spend the week waiting for the weekend so I can sit at my computer and write.

I'm one of nine so my childhood was spent playing with all my brothers and sisters. There was always something to do and some new game to try. And I'm now the proud auntie of fifteen nieces and nephews so it's a whole new generation to share my wisdom with. Which for now doesn't really go beyond 'read Harry Potter' but to me that's a very important piece of wisdom to pass on.

I have a dog, Poppy, who looks like she belongs in a Disney movie and is a genius when it comes to getting into mischief, and a cat, Mac. Until I have kids those two are my babies! And I’m one of those people who takes an insane number of photos of my animals and then forces people to look at how cute they are. If you meet me, you’ve been warned!

I hate to fly, but love to travel so I’m waiting on someone to invent a machine that transports me from one country to another in a flash. Fingers crossed.

2. What kind of books do you bring with you when you go on holiday?

I tend to take a book I’ve wanted to read but never quite gotten around to. If it’s the only book I have with me then I have no choice but to read it! Genius plan! So on past holidays I’ve read Pride & Prejudice, Wicked by Geoffrey Maguire, Labyrinth by Kate Mosse, The Ice Cream Girls by Dorothy Koomson.

3. If you could spend a sunny day anywhere how would your perfect day look like?

First I’d take my dog, Poppy, on as long of a walk as she’d let me and then I’d happily sit outside with a pen and paper and write. Or with a book. It would all depend on what mood I was in. Maybe go out for a coffee in the afternoon or run around playing with my nieces and nephews.

Wow, that’s kind of a boring day, isn’t it? I should say I’d spend the day at the beach swimming and surfing or doing something like that, but a perfect day to me is one spent with the characters inside my head!

4. Could you tell us about your hobbies (when you are not writing or reading)?

Is there such a thing as hobbies outside of the world of books?!
I like to cook and bake so I’m constantly on Google looking up recipes and I’m obsessed with walking so I walk my dog, a lot. And I do love to go shopping. My bank account doesn’t always appreciate that, but oh well.

5. Where do you find the inspiration for your stories?

From all around me! Sometimes it’ll just be a random thought that pops into my head and a story takes shape from that, or I’ll get character or story inspiration from watching TV and movies. Songs are also a great source of inspiration and when I’m forming a story in my head I find listening to music really helps it along.

I love to daydream. I’ve been a daydreamer since I was a kid and my mind hops from one thought to the next, one question to the next. So a lot of my ideas come from the weird musings that take place in my own head.

6. If you could be any leading character from a bestselling book, who would you be and why?

Alanna of Trebond, The Song of the Lioness Quartet by Tamora Pierce. She disguises herself as a boy so she can fulfill her dream of being a knight and ends up kicking butt. She not only wins her shield, but goes on to become the most powerful sorceress of the realm. She goes after what she wants and doesn’t stop until she gets it. She’s driven, a loyal friend and you’d want her on your side in a fight.

7. What's your favorite reading spot?

In summer, outside on my deck. In winter, curled up on the couch with a blanket and my animals squished in beside me keeping me warm!

8. What is your favorite holiday destination and what do you like so much about it?

My favourite at the moment is Hawaii. Sun, sand, and awesome shopping! I’m all about the relaxing holidays these days instead of the jumping from city to city every few days holiday and Hawaii is the perfect place to relax. Plus the food and cocktails are pretty special!

9. Do you have any advice for authors who would like to write a sunny story?

Stay away from depressing music! It may sound silly but try to match your environment to what you’re working on. That’s what I need to do. If I’m working on something sunny, I listen to fun music and work in my kitchen because it’s open and light and I can see outside. When I’m working on something darker, I sit in the study and listen to gloomy music.

10. What can we expect from you in the future?

Hopefully a lot! I’m currently working on rewrites on a YA contemporary that is sort of a young adult Pretty Woman. And I’m halfway through a draft of the first book in a planned YA contemporary trilogy. And I have lot of other ideas that I’m itching to work on. I just need to find the time to do it all!
