Book Review - Been Here All Along by Sandy Hall

About Sandy Hall
I’m a teen librarian from New Jersey where I was born and raised. I have a BA in Communication and a Master of Library and Information Science from Rutgers University. When I’m not writing, or teen librarian-ing, I enjoy reading, slot machines, marathoning TV shows, and long scrolls through Tumblr. A LITTLE SOMETHING DIFFERENT is my first novel.

Review by Suze
Gideon and Kyle are best friends. Gideon is smart and organized and Kyle is athletic and chaotic. They are different, but they complement each other. Kyle is dating Ruby, the most popular girl at school, while Gideon isn't interested in having a relationship. When Gideon realizes he'd like Kyle to be more than just a friend he panics. He tries to keep his distance because Kyle's already taken. Kyle has no idea what's going on and feels lost without his best friend.
Kyle is in trouble. He might even lose his spot on the basketball team and therefore his chance to go to a good college. He's struggling and even though he does everything he can he can't seem to change the situation. There are also problems in his relationship with Ruby, they started when he told her he's bisexual. He needs Gideon more now than ever, but will Gideon be able to be his best friend when something has obviously changed in the way he sees their connection?
Been Here All Along is a sweet story about true love and strong friendships. The connection between Gideon and Kyle is incredibly strong. They have been friends since they were five years old and they've been inseparable ever since. Gideon loves studying, he's good at making lists and he has a life plan. Kyle is disorganized, he's a whirlwind who's good at basketball and he's dating a beautiful girl. It seems like they're very different, but they actually have a lot in common. Being honest with your best friend when everything has changed is difficult and it's obvious things aren't easy for both of them. I liked Gideon and Kyle's friendship from the start, they are really cute together and it's clear their bond is special, which is something I liked a lot.
Been Here All Along has four narrators. Kyle and Gideon each get their own voice and there are also chapters that are being told from the point of view of Ruby and Gideon's brother Ezra. This is a nice way to get to know Kyle and Gideon from different sides. Sandy Hall mainly focuses on the development of the relationship between the two boys and they are truly adorable. There aren't many unexpected twists and turns in this story, the focus is on the friendship and the love between the two friends. I think this is a good choice. Been Here All Along is a fun and quick read that made me smile plenty of times.
