Ella and Maddy are twins and they look so much alike that it's hard for people to tell them apart. They sometimes switch when it's convenient, but normally they're good at letting people know who's who because they couldn't be more different. Maddy is the popular one who has a large group of friends. She also has a steady boyfriend. Ella is the quiet one who has one good friend. She has no experience in love, she's a good student and she loves to draw. She's the opposite of popular and thinks everybody prefers her sister over her.
Then one terrible night they get into a car accident and Maddy dies. Ella is the one who survives, but everybody thinks she's her sister. She doesn't dare to correct them and that means she has to start living Maddy's life. Only that appears to be a lot more problematic than she thought. Maddy was keeping secrets and Ella has no idea what they are. She has to find out before she can figure out what to do next. Will she be able to keep her sister alive for everyone who loves her or will she go back to being herself?
The Secrets We Keep is an interesting story about two sisters who might look alike, but who have very different personalities. I immediately liked the talented and studious Ella. She can use a bit more confidence and courage, but she has a good heart. Maddy is the pretty one, the outgoing and stylish of the two. She also is the person who's pushed her sister away and who's keeping secrets. I love stories about sisters and this is a good one. The swap is a great idea for a story that works very well. Pretending to be someone for an hour is a lot less difficult than permanently living their life. It leads to all kinds of complicated situations, something I loved about this story.
Trisha Leaver's writing flows easily. The Secrets We Keep is a quick read and I finished it in one sitting. The focus is mainly on the impact that everything that's going on has on Ella's life. I enjoyed reading about her creativity and even though she doesn't feel comfortable with her situation she does everything she can to make things right. I loved the ending of the story, it's both fitting and very sweet.
