Thief of Lies by Brenda Drake

Review by Suze
Gia loves the Boston Athenaeum. She's a big fan of books and reading and she likes spending time there with her friends. When Gia meets Arik she's interested in something besides the books as well. When he disappears Gia finds the book he's left behind. Only it isn't just a book, it's a key. By accident she transports her friends to the Paris Library and that is where being hunted begins...
Gia discovers a whole new world. She meets relatives she's never seen before and some of her childhood memories are finally starting to make sense. Gia and her friends aren't safe though. It's crucial for her survival that she finds out who her allies are as quickly as possible.
Thief of Lies is the first book of the Library Jumpers series. I love the idea to use beautiful old libraries that are filled with history for a fantasy series. There was a lot going on in the story and there are quite many characters, who all have their own function. Gia discovers many new things about herself and after that her life will never be the same again. Most of the ideas Brenda Drake uses aren't completely new, but she combines them well. I enjoyed reading her story very much. I think it's fast-paced and well thought through.
Gia is fabulous. She's tough, she's looking after her friends and she's following her heart. I liked that a lot about her. A series like this needs a sympathetic main character and Brenda Drake delivers someone who has likability in spades. There are also quite a few handsome guys to keep her occupied. I liked the way magic is being used. There are several fabulous fighting scenes and the story managed to grip me from the start. I think this series has a lot of potential and I can't wait to read the second book.

  1. How have I missed this book? It sounds like something my daughter and my middle school students would love.
