Ryan's Bed by Tijan - Book Review, Interview & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Anniek

Mackenzie and her twin sister Willow will be eighteen soon. Just before their senior year in high school they move with the whole family because of their father's promotion at work. Mackenzie's younger brother Robbie is a computer prodigy and her twin sister Willow is the perfect one. Mackenzie has always felt average, living in the shadow of her popular sister. One day before their birthday everything changes when Mackenzie finds Willow on the bathroom floor. Willow has committed suicide and this shatters her family's world. Mackenzie has no idea how to deal with the grief she's feeling. Her father and mother are distant and her old friends won't even talk to her. How will Mackenzie cope with the fact that every time someone looks at her they will also see Willow?

Mackenzie and Willow were identical twins. They were so connected and Mackenzie is consumed with guilt that she wasn't able to prevent Willow from doing what she did. Mackenzie hasn't been able to sleep well, but when she accidentally ends up in Ryan's bed she feels peaceful. From that moment Mackenzie sleeps next to Ryan more often. She has no idea why she needs him to feel better, she just does. She and Ryan connect on a deeper level and he's always there to help her. Mackenzie still feels her sister around her and talks to Willow in her mind. How will she ever be able to come to terms with what happened when a piece of her died that day as well?

Ryan's Bed is a story about a tremendous loss, pain and grief. It's a powerful story and it grabbed me from the very beginning. Ryan's Bed is such a raw and pure story that it made my heart ache. I literally felt every word. This story is an emotional rollercoaster and I cried several times. Every person deals with grief and loss in a different way and my heart went out to Mackenzie and her family. Ryan's Bed is a book about an incredibly difficult topic and Tijan wrote about it with so much respect that the story's moving and thought-provoking, but never feels too heavy. In the acknowledgements Tijan talks about how writing Ryan's Bed changed her and reading this story definitely changed me as well. Tijan is a new author for me and with Ryan's Bed she's left an unforgettable impression.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m actually pretty private, but there’s no big reason for that. I just am. I’ve a significant other, a crazy English cocker spaniel that I adore, and I absolutely love writing. Like, I crave it. Lol! I’m a little unhealthily obsessed with Will Ferrell and I could probably recite the entire movie, Elf, is paid enough and I’ve got enough wine in me. ;)

2. Can you describe the main characters of Ryan's Bed in seven words each?

Lost. Hurting. Loved. Beautiful. Confused. Hopeful. Powerful.

3. Ryan's Bed is raw and realistic, how did you handle the emotional part of writing this book?

Oh boy. I had to take breaks, lots and lots of breaks. I can usually push through and finish a book earlier than I did with this one, but nope. Every single scene had me crying. It was just, a lot! And it was a full transition to pull out of that and start working on the next project. It’s two weeks later and I’m still trying to do that. Lol!

4. How did your writing journey start?

I was a voracious reader when I was younger. When I’d go traveling with my family, I would bring a garbage bag full of library novels (and that was just for the road trip to the place, not even coming back!) I couldn’t get enough of reading. I would almost live in my school’s library aisle about Native American literature. That obsession turned to romance when my sister gifted me my first teen romance book. Then it was all over for me. I loved romance! That was the beginning for me, but I didn’t start writing until one day I was at my family’s cabin. I had these people and worlds in my head, and I felt like I was going to go crazy. I had to get them out of my head, and that’s what I did. I booted up my dad’s old computer. (I didn’t even know if it would work!) But it did and once I started typing, I knew writing was what I had to do! Ever since then, I’ve just kept writing and kept learning, and I kind of fumbled my way into this life. I’ve never looked back and never will!

5. What do you like to do when you're not writing or reading?

I’d like to say not working, but I probably am. I’m probably thinking of new promotion ideas or doing book orders. If I’m absolutely not working, then I’m bugging my guy or cuddling with my pup! Movies, television, and reading are some of my hobbies too.

6. Do you have a writing routine?

Nah. I get up and start writing as soon as I’m done doing all my business stuff. I write the best when I don’t have anything pressing on me, like another book’s deadline or my agent needs sales numbers from me etc. I think my biggest routine is getting coffee to drink before turning the computer on, putting the headphones on, and starting to type away.

7. What makes your heart beat faster?

Exercise.

8. Do you have a favorite quote and what does it mean to you?

There’s probably a ton, but I saw a quote from my Jaded book on someone’s website early on and it’s stuck with me. That was the first time seeing my words elsewhere, that I had stuck with someone. That quote is: You have to earn respect. You can’t just demand it.

9. Could you decribe what a typical day looks like for you?

Wake up, look to see if Jason’s up or not. It doesn’t matter if he is or isn’t. If I want to get myself out of bed, I grab the phone and start going over emails. That usually does the trick, then I’ll get coffee. Let my dog out. Head to my office (with coffee in hand), and then I’m usually there for a long while except to take breaks every now and then during the day. If I’m super ambitious, I’m on the elliptical at night.

10. What are your plans for the future?

I’ve got Bad Boy Brody coming out May 7th, and then I have a few projects I get to unveil after that. I have to finish this one book before announcing anything, but trust me; I’ve got things coming!! For book signings, I’ll be at Apollycon in March, the Twin Cities Author Event in Minneapolis, Book Bonanza in Denver, New York for the Authors in the City signing, and then the Origin Event in Texas! So lots of traveling, lots of writing, and hopefully lots of cuddles with my pup!
