Book Review - Then She Was Gone by Lisa Jewell

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Suze

Fifteen-year-old Ellie is the light of her mother's life. Ellie is smart, cheerful, confident and also very much in love. One day she disappears and the police can't find any trace of her. Ellie's mother Laurel doesn't think her daughter ran away, she's convinced something happened to Ellie. Is she right? What happened on the day her daughter didn't come home?

Laurel has never given up on her golden child and is still looking for clues many years later. She hasn't moved on and this has cost her dearly. Laurel is divorced and has a difficult relationship with her other children. Is it time for Laurel to let Ellie go? When Laurel meets Floyd she immediately feels drawn to him. They start dating and Floyd introduces her to his children. His nine year old daughter Poppy reminds Laurel of Ellie. There's a striking resemblance, which makes Laurel think about the past again. Because of meeting Poppy Laurel starts asking questions about Ellie's disappearance once more. What happened to her daughter, will she finally be able to find some answers?

Then She Was Gone is a fantastic gripping story. I was immediately captivated by both Laurel and Ellie. Lisa Jewell alternates her points of view, which makes it possible to get to know the family really well. Ellie's disappearance is a huge mystery and I couldn't turn the pages quickly enough to find out what happened to her. The story is surprising in many different ways, which is something I absolutely loved. Lisa Jewell has written an amazing story, it's shocking, emotional and insane at the same time, a terrific combination.

Lisa Jewell's writing is captivating and easy to read. She writes the most compelling page-turners and with Then She Was Gone she's added another brilliant story to her already impressive list of books. They're all interesting, original and different. I love how versatile her stories are. I liked the chaos, the depth and the twistedness of Then She Was Gone. It's thrilling, bizarre, complex and brilliantly narrated. I highly recommend this stunning book.
