Book Review - The Rules of Magic by Alice Hoffman

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Suze

Franny, Jet and Vincent know they are special. Franny has a gift with birds, Jet knows people's thoughts and Vincent is gifted with music. They're part of the Owen family, which means they have certain abilities, but they are also cursed. Love is a curse, but it is also part of life and Franny, Jet and Vincent will all lose their hearts. They have to discover who they are, what's important to them, what's inside their hearts and what magic does truly mean for them.

Franny is the smart one, Jet is the pretty one and Vincent is the charismatic one. The Owen siblings aren't born for a life filled with luck. They will find trouble and sadness on their way, but also hope, unconditional love and strong family connections. What will life bring them and how will they be able to deal with their gifts? How will the curse affect them all and will they be able to escape from it or not?

The Rules of Magic is a beautiful story about three fascinating siblings. I love stories about family and immediately fell in love with this one. Franny is strong and knows what she wants, but getting her way is a completely different matter. Jet is willing to break the rules for what she believes is right. She's gorgeous and loves with all her heart, but that isn't always enough. Vincent is lost for a long time, until he can finally acknowledge something that's an important part of him. However, it's also something that will bring him difficulties. I loved these contrasts. The Owen siblings don't live cheerful happy lives, their existence is raw and there are constants ups and downs, which is what I enjoyed the most about their story. I felt like I truly got to know each member and loved that I could get so close to them.

Alice Hoffman writes about magic in a brilliant way. Her stories always manage to mesmerize me from beginning to end. I read The Rules of Magic in one sitting, I couldn't put it down. I had to know what would happen to Franny, Jet and Vincent. Their stories are equally interesting and there are many surprising twists and turns that kept me on the edge of my seat. The Rules of Magic is spellbinding, compelling, bittersweet and really, really good. I highly recommend this fantastic magical story.

Advice

If you love stories about magic and complex family relationships you will definitely like The Rules of Magic. It's a prequel, book 0 in the Practical Magic series, but can easily be read as a standalone.

  7. The cover is stunning, the plot interesting and I have the feeling this book is more original than the one about the same topic. Magic is something humans will always be fascinated about.
