Best Friends… Forever and Butterfly Necklaces
By Krysten Lindsay Hager

I reflect a lot on my own teen and preteen years when I am writing the Landry’s True Colors Series. Things like best friend bracelets and necklaces were very popular when I was in middle school. Looking back I see what a fair-weather thing they often were at the time, which is why I have Landry getting her first best friend necklace (in True Colors) with Devon, a girl she doesn’t have the healthiest relationship with. Devon is the kind of friend who takes over a bit and if you’re someone like Landry who is quieter and not great with confrontation, then it’s easy to feel pushed around. I wanted Landry to be able to realize this wasn’t the best relationship for her and begin to see what she needed from a friendship. It showed the importance of finding your tribe—where you feel the most comfortable and the friends that support you, which in her case meant Peyton and Ashanti.

In Best Friends…Forever? I wanted to focus on not only what you need in a friendship, but what kind of friend you should aspire to be. In this book, all the girls want to get butterfly crystal necklaces. But things don’t go as planned and drama and infighting cause the other girls to get the necklace without Landry. However, as things get resolved, Landry realizes it’s not just about being included in the group of friends with the necklaces, but it’s just as important to include others---now that goes a bit wrong for a bit with Ashanti and Thalia, but no spoilers here! All I will say is good intentions need follow through and it’s always important to consider other people’s feelings. The book showcases the importance of being a good friend as well as having a good friend which is a theme in many of my books.

It can be fun to be included and to share something special like a necklace or bracelet, but as Landry sees, it’s important for that bond of friendship to be stronger than the actual chain for it to work—otherwise it can end up feeling more like a handcuff as Landry found out. I have to say that while the friends I often shared BFF jewelry with in middle school haven’t always remained close to me, my best friend now is someone I became friends with in high school! In fact, you might find her name woven into most of my books! Just look for the name “Laura,” which is attached to the last name of different celebrities she’s had a crush on in the past. Now that I’m older I realize the importance of true friendship and I hope to share that with my readers by using some of the more painful friendship ups and downs I myself experienced in my teen and preteen years.
