Book Review - Losing a Piece of Me by K.B. Andrews

Review by Anniek

It's been six years since Lex has been home, but now that her sister is getting married she's forced to return. She left without saying a word and built a life for herself somewhere else. Lex met Striker when they were young teenagers. Together they gave the sheriff of the town a run for his money. They were hellbent on pulling pranks and got better at it along the way. Lex and Striker grew up together and fell in love. Nothing stood in the way of their happily ever after. What happened that made Lex abandon the only man she ever loved?

Striker lost a piece of himself the day he found out that Lex vanished into thin air. He tried to find her, but never found out why she left or where she went. Striker had a rough childhood and the one thing that kept him going was Lex. He did everything for her and endured all of his father's abuse, just so they could run away together when they would both be eighteen. He was never able to get over her. Living in a small town means news travels fast and when Striker learns about the fact that Lex is back he knows that he has to see her. Will Striker finally discover what made Lex run all of those years ago?

Lex knew that her past would come back to haunt her the moment she'd get back in town. She isn't close to her parents and she has an exceptionally cold relationship with her mother. Her mother disapproves of Lex's lifestyle and tries to introduce her to men that she finds suitable. Lex carries around a lot of guilt about why and how she left. She thinks that the secret she's keeping would have destroyed Striker, so she ran and decided to go through all of it on her own. Lex isn't an easy person to be with. She's closed off, stubborn, difficult and full of determination, but once someone has wormed their way through all of her layers she loves strongly and fiercely. The past formed Lex and I felt for her when I was reading about the way her mother treats her. I can't imagine what this must feel like for her. Lex needs to be secure and safe enough to take down her walls and I was hoping for her that Striker would be able to help her with this.

Striker has grown up to be a gorgeous and confident man. He has gone through so much when he was younger and he's still struggling with the things his father did to him. He never had a role model and this made him a rebel. The only thing he's ever known for sure is how much he loved Lex. She made him work for every single thing. Lex took over his heart. He is hers and will never completely belong to someone else. Striker's past made me tear up multiple times. He's so strong and never really got to be a child. I loved the way he handles Lex and how he shows her what true love can be like.

Losing a Piece of Me is a heart wrenching story about two people who get separated for all the wrong reasons. K.B. Andrews describes their story so vividly that it felt like I was watching Lex and Striker from the sidelines. I found myself flying through the pages and I read this story in one sitting. Losing a Piece of Me is intense and has all the elements that a powerful love story needs. K.B. Andrews knows how to grab you and she didn't let me go until the very last lines. I can't wait to read another story written by her.

I truly love (appreciate, really..) a multilayered character. And within a multilayered story? Even better.
Definitely hope to read this one.
