Be a Friend to Have a Friend

Hadley manages to survive high school reasonably well with her best friend Lexi by her side, but when Lexi moves away Hadley feels completely invisible. She knows Lexi will soon forget about her and will move on with her new life. When Hadley has the chance to spend the summer with her grandparents in Grand Haven she's really excited to go. Her grandparents live next door to Simone, a former teenage television star. Hadley can't wait to have the opportunity to meet Simone and maybe have the summer of a lifetime. Will Simone become Hadley's friend? Does Hadley have what it takes to be part of the popular crowd?

Hadley is ready to start over at a place where no one knows her and make new friends. I found her a bit of a pushover sometimes and kept hoping she'd be able to stand up for herself. She's a sweet girl and has a lot to be proud of. She wants to be part of the popular crowd so badly that she forgets what's really important. Hadley is a typical teenager with all the drama and insecurities that are coming with it. She's also very kind and tries to keep everybody happy. I loved the way she treats her grandparents and could feel the love she has for them. She felt incredibly real to me, she's the typical girl next door we all know, which is something I liked a lot about her story.

Next Door to a Star is a fabulous read. The story is realistic and it took me back to when I was a teenager. Krysten Lindsay Hager perfectly captures the essence of what being a teenager is really like. People don't change, but they do grow up and I would love to be able to take a sneak peek into the lives of Hadley and the other girls to see how they'd turn out. I think Next Door to a Star is a great read for teenage girls and I believe that most of them will recognize themselves in Hadley and her friends. Krysten Lindsay Hager is an experienced and skillful writer and that shows. I loved the cute romance aspect of the story and enjoyed reading about the lessons Hadley learns along the way. Next Door to a Star is a brilliant story that I highly recommend.

Advice

Next Door to a Star is a fun and realistic story about starting over in a new town. It has all the drama, newfound love and wishing to be popular that you'd expect when reading about teenagers.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m a young adult and middle grade writer who is obsessed with books and I’m a news junkie, too.

2. What makes your heart beat faster?

I like romantic comedies. The older ones tend to be the best. Lately I’ve been into the ones with the unlikely couples. Love romantic music, too—like George Michael’s.

3. If you could create the perfect romantic day what would it look like?

I love going someplace where we can explore a new area. Over the summer we went stopped in a cute town locally and walked around, did a bit of window shopping, and then came home and watched a great movie.

4. Who are your favorite romantic couple?

Holly and Paul from Breakfast at Tiffany’s are adorable. Something about how that relationship turns out is sweet.

5. Could you describe what romance means to you?

I think it’s doing sweet and thoughtful things for another person. Letting them know in some way you’ve been thinking of them whether it’s with picking up their favorite candy or getting them some music they like—just little ways to let people know you’re thinking of them.

6. Do you find it difficult to write about romance?

No, I’ve sometimes started books not realizing they’re going to have romance in them and then a relationship develops! So I think romance unfolds in stories without being planned sometimes. At least that’s how it works for me.

7. Can you tell us about your most romantic experience?

The year I had a birthday and the guy I was dating was in Iraq and he managed to send me flowers and a present and then walked across base to a call center to call me. That was very sweet. Probably why we got married ;)

8. What kind of music do you like to listen to when you're in a romantic mood?

I am a huge George Michael fan and I love Johnny Gill and Elvis. I don’t think Johnny Gill knows how to make an album that isn’t romantic! There’s a Bangles song called, “Something that You Said,” that is one of my favorite romantic songs.

9. Which country personifies romance for you and why?

I think most people would think of France because of Paris, but I’ve always thought the countryside of England was such a romantic setting for books and movies.

10. What can we expect from you in the future?

I have a YA book called, Dating the It Guy, that came out on March 21st about a girl named Emme dating the high school “it guy” and all the insecurities and drama that go along with it.

  11. Love the sound of this. I always wondered what would happen if you lived next to a star. Met a few and have lived about 10 minutes walk from one of the rugby players of a local (but successful) team, but never stalked him apart from when I took the dog that way occasionally.
