Review by Suze
Ella has left her mortal body behind to spend her life as a doll. She wants to be whole and she's perfectly happy being with Gabby. Gabby is struggling with friendships. She once was seriously ill and she survived, but she's still being seen as unsafe by some. Fortunately she has Ella to keep her company. When people find out about Ella's existence they want to have dolls as well. They are being provided, but where do those dolls actually come from and who's behind making so many of them? Gabby and Ella have to find out what's going on and they don't have much time. They might be able to do something about the sinister plans behind the new dolls, but will they succeed when so many people are against them?
Shattered Girls is another fabulous story about living dolls. I love the idea behind the story and enjoyed reading about Ella. As a doll she's incredibly sweet, but the decision to stay in a small plastic body has done quite a bit of damage to the people who love her. Gabby and Ella are close and I liked their connection. Gabby is smart and strong, which is something I loved about her. I couldn't wait to find out if they'd be able to find the people who were behind the large number of dolls and this kept me on the edge of my seat. They're a fantastic team and that was something I enjoyed very much about their story.
Tyrolin Puxty mixes terrific descriptions of technology with an intriguing mystery. I liked the concept of living people being turned into dolls a lot. They might have been created to do good, but now someone else is using them for gain. Unfortunately this is something that often happens in reality, which is a thought-provoking subject. I was fascinated by this straight away. Shattered Girls is an adrenaline rush with original combat scenes, creepy elements and an interesting view of technology. I love Tyrolin Puxty's world building and really enjoyed reading this amazing creative story.
Shattered Girls is the second book in the Broken Dolls series. It can be read as a standalone, however, Broken Dolls is a fantastic book and I'd recommend you to read them both.
About Tyrolin Puxty
I'm a Jack, or more accurately, a Tyrolin of all Trades.
In my 25 years, I have been in the Top 10 of the Australian Songwriters Association and Top 5 of the Australian Independent Music Awards, was awarded an Australia Day Award for Music in 2014 and for Arts in 2015, worked as a qualified paralegal, appeared in TV Shows, was hired for product photography, modelled, became a Justice of the Peace, started a performing arts school, worked for Discover Magazine, published a book that became an international #1 bestseller, hugged a koala and had a show ride collapse on my head. Yes. A show ride. I'll tell you the story some time.
I like Pokemon. Like...REALLY like. I'm obsessed with all things nerdy and childish. So much that I wrote "Nintendo Love Song". I'm just that obsessed.
1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
That's a novel in itself! I've been writing stories since I could read. In between writing, I run a performing arts school. Music, writing and laughter are the secret to happiness...along with a couple of cats and copious amounts of chocolate.
2. What makes your heart beat faster?
Exercise. Ha, but seriously, I'm not afraid of heights or the dark or anything like that. Usually confrontation of any form will get my heart racing!
3. Which horror monster do you fear the most?
Gremlins. I know realistically I could probably take 'em down, but their theme music and ability to breed quickly is horrifying.
4. If the zombie apocalypse would happen today, what would you do?
Part of me would be excited for the zombie apocalypse, but then again, with our mindless addiction to our phones and tablets, we're about halfway there. There's a warehouse in town that would be a perfect bunker, so I would stock up on a lot of canned food, bring a lot of books and wait it out. Then I'd probably cry.
5. What's your favorite horror movie?
I don't like gore, but I consider doomsday movies like Knowing and Day After Tomorrow to be in the horror genre. I also like the ones with twists, like The Others and The Box.
6. What's your worst nightmare?
My teeth falling out!
7. If your book was made into a movie, who would play the lead characters and why?
Oh, me of course. To be honest, I always envisioned Maddie Zieglar as Ella, especially after meeting her. Chloe Moretz would be a perfect Lisa, and who better to play the professor than Bryan Cranston? I used them as inspiration while writing Broken Dolls.
8. What inspired you to write horror stories?
Nothing inspired me, exactly. The stories were just there in my head and needed to get out!
9. What do you like the most about the horror genre?
That anything can happen. I hate predictable stories and horror isn't always predictable. Sometimes it has a cruel twist of fate...which is a lot like life.
10. What can we expect from you in the future?
A lot! You can follow my YouTube channel where I interview the characters from my books, and sing original songs. I have four books coming out in the next two years, the most recent being Colt Harper: Esteemed Vampire Cat in June. It's a comedy-horror, with a touch of romance and fantasy.
If you want exclusive content, you can sign up to https://tyrolin.wishknish.com/ to get swag and more of my books!
