Sloan managed to get away from her family and the oppressive life she used to lead. She had help from one of her brothers and he's assured her that nobody will be able to find her. Her biggest wish is to be free and have a life of her own, far from her criminal family and their underworld politics. She finds herself a job and finally she can start living the life she's always dreamed of. When she meets Jude she's instantly attracted to him, but Jude isn't safe. Will Sloan risk to lose her newfound freedom for a man and is she really as well hidden as she thought she was?

Jude has one mission in life, revenge on the people who killed his family. He works alone and he isn't looking for complications, like falling in love with a harmless and inexperienced woman like Sloan. Especially not because when someone would link their backgrounds they'll be put in an extremely dangerous situation. It isn't easy to stay away from the woman whose company he craves though. Will Jude and Sloan be willing to risk everything they value in life for each other?

Forbidden Promises is a gripping story. Jude isn't afraid to kill, he's used to hiding, spying on people and shadowing his targets. Sloan's had a sheltered upbringing and she's only just discovering what it's like to stand on her own two feet. Jude is her neighbor and he isn't who he says he is. Sloan feels at ease with him though. There are plenty of sparks and their chemistry is amazing, but their histories are complicating things between them. Katee Robert alternates hot scenes with underworld schemes, old and new feuds and unsafe situations. This kept me on the edge of my seat and I was really curious to find out if Jude and Sloan would be able to survive and have a chance together.

Katee Robert's writing has a nice flow. She writes about characters who definitely aren't sweet in a raw and honest way. Jude is tough and ruthless, but he also has a soft side. Every situation is being described from different angles and that made the story extra interesting for me. I love how Katee Robert plays with the boundaries between good and evil. Even though her characters have flaws and they are rough and sometimes cruel there's plenty to like about them as well. This makes her stories fascinating and original. Forbidden Promises is a great book with a wonderful fitting ending.

Advice

Forbidden Promises is the fourth book in a series about an interesting family, The O'Malleys. The books can be read as standalones, as Katee Robert gives her readers enough information so they can easily follow the story. If you'd like to have all the details, however, I'd start with The Marriage Contract.

About Katee Robert

New York Times and USA TODAY bestselling author Katee Robert learned to tell her stories at her grandpa’s knee. Her 2015 title, The Marriage Contract, was a RITA finalist, and RT Book Reviews named it 'a compulsively readable book with just the right amount of suspense and tension." When not writing sexy contemporary and romantic suspense, she spends her time playing imaginary games with her children, driving her husband batty with what-if questions, and planning for the inevitable zombie apocalypse.

The O'Malley family
by Katee Robert

The O’Malley family has been a true delight for me to write. They deal with things so far beyond the average scope of experiences—life and death politics, arranged marriages, enemies waiting for a misstep—but at their heart, they’re a family like any other. Complicated, with a solid foundation of love and a dollop of communication issues.

When I set out to write this series, the O’Malley siblings really jumped off the page from the very first scene with Teague and Carrigan and Aiden. Each of the siblings slowly unveiled their hopes and dreams over the course of the first couple books, and Sloan’s book, Forbidden Promises, is no different.

Up to this point, Sloan has been the wallflower in the room full of fiery personalities. Her survival skills are made up of flying beneath the radar and blending in, and her siblings all view her with varying degrees of protectiveness. All of these elements are ones that we recognize, even if we didn’t grow up in large family.

It’s only the stakes that are different. With enemies closing in from every corner, Sloan finding her freedom and independence suddenly rockets her into danger unlike she’s dealt with up to this point. Her over-protective brothers have spent so long watching over her, they’re having trouble realizing that maybe she is capable of standing on her own two-feet.

It was so much fun to play with those elements and put them together into a story set in one of my favorite places—the Oregon and Washington coasts. And there’s a bit more of the O’Malley family dynamic left to explore—the responsible (and a bit manipulative) oldest brother, Aiden, and the rebellious youngest sister, Keira, will each see their stories told!
