Wucaii by Pembroke Sinclair - Book Review, Interview & Giveaway

Amazon USA Amazon UK Goodreads

Review by Anniek

Aelana is the perfect mix of human and dragon. She's a myth and a legend. Aelana is called a wucaii, which means royal protector. When the end of the world is near Aelana will choose who will survive and live to rebuild civilization. After 500 years Aelana has returned to earth. She puts on a disguise so that everyone sees her as a human. She once was in love, his name was Thoran. He was appalled when he saw her after her transformation. Aelana lost him for good when he gave his life to save hers. Now that she’s back on earth and has found the reincarnation of her one true love will she be able to save him as well?

Dragon’s don’t regret anything, humans do. Aelana frequently wonders if the decisions she made in the past were the right ones. She feels guilty, but also hopes that it was all worth it. Without Aelana nothing remains. The dragons destroy everything and will only let people live when they are marked. This information is given to them by Aelana. Does she always make the best choices? Probably not, but Aelana accepts the fact that she can’t save everyone.

Aelana is a complex character who has a lot going for her. She has feelings and emotions just like humans do, but she also has a cold and calculated dragon side. This combination made her very interesting. I loved reading about her decisions and the paths she chooses to follow. She has her insecurities, just like everybody else, however she's also enormously strong. She has only ever loved one person and I was cheering for her to have this love again.

Wucaii is an original story about the end of the world and surviving the apocalypse. The approach of this topic is original and different and this kept me hooked. I wanted to find out who would be left standing after the apocalypse. I love to read stories about the end of the world and Pembroke Sinclair provides a whole new angle with Wucaii. Her main characters really stand out, because they have so many unique qualities. The result is a fabulous story which will stay with me for a long time. Pembroke Sinclair is an author I will definitely follow in the future.

Advice

Wucaii is a creative and original story about the end of the world and the possibility of surviving the apocalypse, combined with legends and eternal love. Wucaii is a story to remember and it's a perfect choice for readers who love gripping books about dragons combined with an interesting view of the world.

About Pembroke Sinclair

When I first started writing, my goal was to be classified as a sci fi/fantasy writer. But as I honed my skills and found my writing style, I found that I enjoyed writing in several different genres. Now, I write an eclectic mix of fiction ranging from Westerns to horror to sci fi to fantasy.

The first story I had published was based on one of my spouse's guiding adventures. After that, things just fell into place. I've had several short stories published in several different places, and I have two novels, with a third on they way, and I recently signed a contract for my fourth. One of my short stories, Sohei, was even voted as a "Best of 2008" story by the Cynic Online.

I also write nonfiction, which I publish under my real name. My first dabbling in nonfiction was when I wrote my thesis for my Master's in English. I never really got into it. I tried to get a couple of articles published, but no one wanted to read about slasher films, so I put them away.

My father-in-law hooked me up with a gig writing for an agricultural magazine, Western Farmer-Stockman. I knew very little about agriculture (still don't, really), but with a little research, you can become an expert in anything! I emailed the editor, and he took me on without looking at a resume or a writing sample. It was flabbergasting. Luckily for both of us, it worked out. After 3 years, I stopped writing agricultural articles. They became incredibly time consuming and tedious. I wanted to spend that time working on fiction and not looking for another person to interview. But the experience I gained was priceless. I'm glad I had the opportunity to work for Western Farmer-Stockman.

I was also a staff writer for a magazine that focuses on serial killers. I fell into that. My goal was to send in one article and leave it at that, but the editor liked my writing style so much, he asked me to produce more articles. I was also lucky enough to write the articles for the calendar they put out. I had several other articles published by them, but, like the agricultural articles, they were time consuming and not what I wanted to focus on.

My biggest nonfiction project to date is developing my thesis into a book. That has been interesting. That is still an ongoing saga...

Eventually, I finished turning my thesis into a book and found a publishing company who was willing to print it, Scarecrow Press. It was released in June 2012. For more information about my stories, please check out the "Short Stories" tab and the "Novels, Novellas, and Nonfiction" tab.

Interview

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I really enjoy horror films. I have two young boys, two Corgis (who are the best dogs in the world), and an incredibly sweet kitty. I enjoy reading and writing and doing geeky things. I try to instill the love of reading into my children, and we are currently reading Jurassic Park.

2. You wish to be an alien queen when you grow up ;). If you were the queen what would be the first thing you'd change?

Hate. It would be the first thing to go. People would still be allowed to have opinions and disagree, but they wouldn’t be allowed to be jerks and hateful to one another.

3. Aelana is half-human / half-dragon. If you could have the abilities of any mythical creature which one would you choose and why?

Is there a mythical creature that could multiply itself? I’d pick that one so I could get everything I need to get done, done.

4. Could you describe Aelana in 5 words?

Strong, opinionated, loving, confused, determined

5. Wucaii is about the ending of the world as we know it. What would Aelana do differently if she had a choice?

Well, back in the day I’m sure she wouldn’t have been turned into a hybrid. In the present, I think she would try to get rid of fear and hate.

6. Aelana is a strong heroine. If you could be a character from another book, who would you be and why?

Ripley from the Alien series because she is the first female character that really inspired me. And she gets to hang out with the Alien Queen.

7. If you could make a mythical creature real, which one would you choose and why?

A gryphon. It’s a mix of different animals—a hybrid—and just so damn cool! Or even a dragon. They’re pretty cool too.

8. You have also written a young adult zombie novel. How would you survive in a zombie-destroyed world?

My family and I talk about this all the time. We’re very luck to live in a pretty small town, so we probably wouldn’t have a huge influx of zombies. Plus, we’re close to the mountains, so we would flee there until things were safe. We have outdoor skills, so while it will suck not to have showers and indoor plumbing, we should fare pretty well.

Of course, the house I live in is brick with tall windows, so it’s possible we won’t have to leave at all.

9. What's your favorite quote and why does this one mean so much to you?

Oh, my gosh. There are so many out there that I like. I like any that are encouraging and help people be kind to one another and encourage them to reach for their dreams. So often in life the world holds us down—and we let it—so we have to take control of our own destiny and reach for what we want.

10. What can we expect from you in the future?

I currently have another young adult zombie series that will be coming out called Saving Humanity. The first book is called Humanity’s Hope. I’m hoping for an early 2017 release. I’m almost done with a very rough draft of book 2 in the series.

  8. Aelana certainly sounds like she's got a lot going for her, but the combination of human/dragon bring out some interesting contradictory traits.
