Emma moved from New York to Sanctuary Cove to get over a broken heart and a ruined career. She worked as a communications executive, but because she didn't condone the behavior of the senator she was working for and her fiancé did, she lost both her job and her husband-to-be. Emma left the city and the misery it brought her behind. She has a beautiful lakefront cabin with plenty of land, which is a perfect place to lick her wounds. It's ideal for her dog Max and Emma pays her bills from her savings and the few freelance assignments she can still get because of her impressive resume.
When Emma finds a hurt dog on the side of the road she calls Josh, the local vet. They meet in the pouring rain and Josh's first impression of Emma isn't very positive. However, when he finds out she didn't only rescue the dog from a hit by someone else, but also wants to take him in when no owner is being found, he discovers how nice she actually is. There's a spark and Josh wants to get to know Emma better. She has a lot of baggage though and not all of it is completely in the past, her present is being haunted by everything that happened to her in New York. Is there room for love in Emma's life and does he have a chance with her?
Sanctuary Cove is a gripping romantic story about two people who clearly belong together. Emma is a sweetheart. She's a woman with a conscience and she isn't afraid to do the right thing, even when the consequences are dire. I admired her courage and her determination to keep fighting for her future, even though she isn't in a good place emotionally. Josh is her rock and I loved that about him. He's a real gentleman with perfect manners, a protective and chivalrous nature and plenty of patience. I loved his kindheartedness and his ability to listen to his intuition over and over again. Emma and Josh both care about animals a lot and I liked how they bond over their mutual passion. Their beautiful deep connection becomes even more meaningful because of their love for dogs.
Kate James has written a suspenseful and romantic story. Emma's problems started when she didn't feel comfortable working for a senator with clear political goals and no scruples. While she's trying to do the right thing she puts herself at risk and even though it gives her a lot of stress she still does her best to help finding out the truth about the actions of this man. She's never trusted him and rightly so. This part of the story kept me on the edge of my seat. I loved the lovely sweet romance combined with the thrill of this intriguing case.
Sanctuary Cove is a stunning place to live. I could easily feel the healing aspect of this special setting. Kate James's colorful descriptions of Josh's practice, the town itself and Emma's land made it impossible not to fall in love with it. I loved the friendly nature of the relationship between Emma and Josh and really enjoyed reading about the time they spend with their animals. I always like it when dogs have distinct personalities and that's another aspect of Kate James's story that made me happy. Sanctuary Cove is a great unique book with a wonderful heartwarming ending.
If you like small town romance combined with amazing dogs and a gripping plot Sanctuary Cove would be a very good choice.
