With Love For Romantic Books Cold - Winter at the Dog & Duck by Jill Steeples - Book Review & Giveaway

Review by Suze

When Ellie was made redundant she decided not to look for another job in London straight away. Instead she moved back home to Little Leyton first to have a few months of peace. She's set up a dog walking business and works at the Dog and Duck, which is the local pub and the meeting place for the community. The landlord is like a second father to Ellie and she loves seeing him and her other Little Leyton friends every day. Unfortunately the property is for sale, so the future of the Dog and Duck is uncertain, can Ellie's beloved pub be saved?

Ellie and Johnny used to be a couple and even though they're seeing each other again something doesn't feel right. Ellie is missing something and she knows what when she meets Max. There are plenty of sparks between them, but they are from different worlds. Max owns a mansion and is a successful and rich property developer. Ellie doesn't know what to think of him. Max doesn't share anything about himself, but he does seem to like her. Will dating Max feel more right than seeing Johnny and could Ellie have a romantic future in her hometown?

Winter at the Dog & Duck is a wonderful winter story. Ellie is a sweetheart. She's great with dogs, she's kind to people and she loves being part of the Little Leyton community. She's always happy for others, even when she's sad herself she has plenty of smiles for the people she cares about. She's perfectly at ease in the pub, in a field with her beloved dogs and in an office where she has to work with difficult numbers. I loved that her personality is so versatile. She's a fabulous main character and I enjoyed reading about her and her romances very much. I was curious to find out what the future would bring for her and couldn't stop reading until I knew, which means I read this book in one sitting.

Winter at the Dog & Duck is a story that covers several months of Ellie's life. I loved reading about the different seasons, the beautiful countryside village and its fascinating inhabitants, the dogs, who all have their own distinctive characteristics, and the changes in life that are never without a struggle. Jill Steeples has a warm and cozy voice that makes her story feel welcoming and appealing. Winter at the Dog and Duck is a lovely and sweet story. It completely enchanted me and put a big smile on my face.

Advice

Winter at the Dog & Duck ends at Christmas. It's a regular romantic countryside story with a lovely festive finale, so it can both be read as a Christmas story and as a general winter story.

About Jill Steeples

I live in a small market town in Bedfordshire with my husband, two children and a high maintenance English Pointer called Amber.

When I’m not writing, I love spending time with family and friends, and enjoy books, films, musical theatre, walking, baking cakes, eating them and drinking wine.

As a teenager I discovered the fabulously funny romances of Jilly Cooper, and vowed, one day, I’d have a go at writing one of my own.

It was only when I was approaching one of those scary big-zero birthdays that I realised if I didn’t get round to it soon, then I might never do it! It really was a case of ‘It’s Now or Never’ which just so happens to be the title of one of my novels! (Did you see what I did there!?)

I joined a local creative writing class and my tutor encouraged me to start by writing short stories which was the best advice I could have been given. It gave me a huge sense of satisfaction to start a project and finish it too. When I sold my first story to a magazine it was such an amazing moment and gave me a big confidence boost. I went on to have many stories published in magazines in the UK and around the world.

Now, I couldn’t be happier spending time doing what I love doing most, creating warm and funny romances with my own brand of happy endings. I hope you’ll enjoy reading my stories too.

  9. I like that the book covers several seasons. I don't always read love stories but this book sounds like it covers more than the romance of the main characters. Perhaps there will be more to this story after Christmas? :)
