Alex loves her daughter Cassy and is fond of their unusual, but very close family. She works at a bakery and dreams of owning her own business. Things are going well until a man she doesn't know claims he is Cassy's father. Cassy is adopted and Hayden was told by someone he hooked up with many years ago that he's the father of a daughter. The baby was given up for adoption and now Hayden is trying to find her. Hayden wants to know if he's Cassy's dad and he is rich enough to be able to take her away from Alex. Is Cassy Hayden's daughter and will Alex's life be destroyed?
Falling for Her Enemy is a great quick read. I loved Alex, she's warm and welcoming and has a heart of gold. She didn't have a loving family when she grew up, but she's making up for it now that she's an adult. Cassy has a stable and cheerful home and she is a happy child. Hayden isn't a bad man, but his life consists of work alone. He never dreamed of being a father, but when he hears he might be one he welcomes the news. He's amazing with Cassy and they instantly have a connection, which is difficult for Alex to witness. Even though she and Hayden are clearly attracted to each other their situation prevents them from acting upon it. That made the story compelling and interesting. There are plenty of sparks and I was intrigued by this impossible situation from the start.
Victoria James has a nice lighthearted writing style that is easy to read. I liked that she's chosen such an original angle for her story. Alex and Hayden are on opposite sides and they both want the same thing, being Cassy's parent, but only one of them can come out of the situation as the 'winner' and the other one will lose everything. Even though a romantic novel almost always has a happy ending Falling for Her Enemy is still surprising and I didn't expect the outcome of the conflict. I love it when an author manages to accomplish that. I really enjoyed reading this clever and creative story.
Falling for Her Enemy is a fun romantic story with a great kid, a handsome rich man and a wonderful mother who loves to bake. It's perfect for readers who like small town romances.
