Owen doesn't like big Christmas parties, he doesn't feel comfortable in a large group of people and he doesn't want to spend the holidays with people he doesn't know. He prefers the company of just a few loved ones, but he doesn't dare to tell his family. That's why he lets his mother know that he's spending Christmas at home with his new girlfriend instead. Owen doesn't have a girlfriend and when his parents, aunt and sister decide to surprise him and celebrate Christmas with Owen and the love of his life he needs to find a solution. Fortunately he can ask his best friend Gabby to fake they're in a relationship. Gabby doesn't have any family and she's secretly in love with Owen, so she says yes straight away.
Owen feels comfortable with Gabby and he loves everything about her. She is his best friend and he can't think of anything he wants more than to spend the holidays with her. He's surprised when there appears to be chemistry between them though, which makes the situation a lot more difficult. Will Gabby and Owen convince Owen's family they are happily in love or will the truth come to the surface and mess everything up?
More Than Friends is a sweet love story. It's clear from the start that Owen and Gabby have a special connection. They're completely at ease with each other until they have to pretend they're a couple. That complicates things between them and their easy friendship turns into something completely different. It was fascinating to see where this would lead. There are plenty of sparks between the main characters and I really liked that.
Gabby is artistic and easygoing. She's kind and attentive. Owen is a sexy nerd and he doesn't always read emotions the right way. He means well and is caring and loving, but he can also screw up spectacularly. That results in some great complex situations he needs to find his way out of, which was definitely amusing. The blundering is charming rather than insensitive. The main characters are adorable, they're exactly right for each other and I loved their closeness. Their love put a big smile on my face.
I'm a big fan of romantic Christmas stories and I read More Than Friends in one sitting. It's such a wonderful heartwarming story. Jody Holford's writing has an easy flow and her story is fun. It's exactly the way I like festive stories to be, lighthearted, endearing and entertaining. I highly recommend this amazing winter story.
More Than Friends is a great choice for readers who like cute stories about friends who are falling for each other.
