Kiss Me at Last by Holly Cortelyou - Book Review, Excerpt & Giveaway

Book review

Review by Anniek

Melinda married the wrong man at a young age. She found out the hard way that love can be very deceiving. Now that she's free again Melinda is going to do whatever she wants. She opens a wine bar in a small town and she is an instant hit. After saving every penny she could Melinda is remodeling the bar to make it more accommodating to her ideas and needs. Things are finally looking up for her and Melinda loves living in Wescott Springs, a charming small town in Colorado.

Sean comes into Melinda's store every other week to buy truffles. Sean and Melinda don't get along because they had a conflict at the town meeting a few months ago. Sean has his own business and is a successful contractor. When his niece Jill calls him to ask him a favor he ends up working on Melinda's wine bar. Both of them are not happy with this course of events but they can't deny that they are attracted to one another. While getting to know each other better they discover that first impressions are not always right.

Melinda is a strong woman who eventually chose herself after being in an abusive marriage. Her self-esteem is still low, but she doesn't let that hold her back from achieving her dreams. Melinda decided that she isn't suited for love, so she doesn't let anybody get close to her emotionally. She is a smart woman who knows what is necessary to make a business successful. I liked that determination. She also has a sweet personality and she stays calm and collected in situations that would have me on the verge of madness.

Sean had his own tragedies to deal with in the past and his personal life sometimes isn't easy either. He visits his mom regularly now that she is in a nursing home. She has dementia and Sean finds it difficult to see her getting worse. He bought his family home and lives there with his mother's dogs. Sean is someone who comes across as a tough man, but he is actually gentle and kind. This shows in how considerate he is when it comes to other people's needs. Sean is a nice guy who deserves a second chance at love. The fact that he can also rebuild a home and knows his way around the kitchen is a big bonus.

Kiss Me at Last is a wonderful romantic story about two people who deserve to be loved again. I always love to read stories that are taking place in small towns. Holly Cortelyou touched my heart with this tender love story. Kiss Me at Last is a quick and easy read and I finished this story in no time. I wanted to keep on reading without a pause to find out how it would end. This was my first book by Holly Cortelyou, but I will absolutely read the other books in this series as well.

Excerpt

With a smile lurking at the corners of his mouth, Sean had been waiting for an eruption for the last ten minutes.

It was day three of construction, and Melinda had looked far from chipper as she'd schlepped into the wine bar at eight in a slouchy gray sweater, faded jeans, and nondescript running shoes. Her eyes were bleary, and she cradled her coffee concoction like it was the crown jewel in the queen's tiara. She'd winced every time his hammer drove home a nail.

Sean grinned. Hangover, he supposed, and he pounded a few extra nails for good measure as she scuttled into her office. That ought to fix her little red wagon, Miss High and Mighty and her sexy British accent. Not that he'd noticed.

He glanced toward her office door, and there was Melinda, staring at him with a stony gaze through half-slitted eyes.

"Good morning, Ms. York," Sean said in his perkiest voice. "Sun's shining, and it's beautiful out." He fiddled with the chuck on the drill and idly revved it a few times for some bonus noise.

"Is there anything quiet you can do for a while?" Melinda said, her tone was pained.

"Not feeling well?"

"I'm fine. I have some phone calls to make to wine distributors and a little peace and quiet would be divine."

"Go back to your coffee shop for those calls. Unless you want me to take a break already? That will slow me down."

Melinda glared. "I'm trying to get some work done, too."

"Well, ma'am. This is a construction zone, so there's going to be noise. We're not slapping on some paint and hanging a few light fixtures. We're adding beams, ripping out floors. What exactly were you expecting? Should I bring a bowl of potpourri or something?"

"That might help." Her tone was drenched in syrup. "Or do you have a silencer for that drill?"

  8. Tantalizing Tidbit: Like my heroine, Melinda, I'm a total champagne junkie! I love me some bubbles! But unlike my heroine, I'm addicted to home improvement and renovations. My hubby is my partner in crime.

  18. Another Tempting Tidbit…I love the mountains, forests and lakes of Colorado (and all of the West, really). When I created Wescott Springs, I decided to whip up the exact kind of town I wished to live in…a swanky resort, a tight knit community, cool shopping, wine bars and lots and lots of hiking trails with cozy spots for trysting couples!

    1. Ah, stop, please! I live in the middle of nowhere in Ireland, where the nearest wine bar is 40 miles away and it's too wet & windy for cozy trysts!

    2. Kate! That's terrible! I live within 3 miles of delightful winery and there are about 75 wineries within a 30 mile radius. Plus, a handful of wine bars in town. Although my favorite wine bar does serve bubbly, I've only been to a Champagne Bar in downtown Denver -- and it was DIVINE!!!

      My heart breaks for you...LOL!
