  2. Characters I want to find out more about and a storyline that takes unexpected turns. But this most important is probably the author's writing style. Some writers can make anything sound gripping.

  29. Good storyline and a plot with that all important twist. But NOT too many characters so you have to keep going back to see where they fit into the story. Needs something to happen within the first few pages or I get bored easily.

  46. I get sucked into a book through the writing style. if it is flowing and makes sense i can't put it down. And if there is a good gripping story line on top of that? i can't put that book down until i have read the entire thing!

  56. I love stories filled with angst. I am than completely engrossed in the story. If it makes my heart break all over again and again, the better. With a HEA of course. I do need a good writing style and no grammar mistakes.

  61. I agree with most people on here that it definitely has to be the characters. Sometimes a book can be good but if the character is annoying, I can't stand it and may not rate it as high as a mediocre book with a character I like.

  71. I love a really good plot that grips me from the beginning, it doesn't matter whether it's a romance, or a thriller, the plot has to be realistic, sensible and keep me interested throughout. It also helps if the characters are well developed too.

    In response to your question of
    What is needed for a book to grip you and why?
    A book has to have an interesting story line with characters that catch my attention.
    I first look at the cover and if it appears interesting
    i will read the back of the book to see
    if it's something i want to read.
