Book Review - A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir

About Sabaa Tahir

Sabaa Tahir grew up in California’s Mojave Desert at her family’s eighteen-room motel. There, she spent her time devouring fantasy novels, raiding her brother’s comic book stash, and playing guitar badly. She began writing An Ember in the Ashes while working nights as a newspaper editor. She likes thunderous indie rock, garish socks, and all things nerd. Sabaa currently lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with her family.

In one single moment Laia loses everything she holds dear. When her brother Darin is arrested for treason she has to find a way to rescue him. She has only one option, even though Laia doesn't know anyone in the resistance she has to ask them for help. In return she will have to become a slave. She has to work for the cruel Commandant and spy for the resistance. From the moment she starts there Laia's life is in danger. Can she rescue her brother while she isn't even sure she can rescue herself?

Elias is a trained fighter. He's supposed to be the Emperor's most loyal soldier, but secretly he hates what he has to do. The Commandant is his mother, but Elias is nothing like her. Elias wants to escape, but a secret mission prevents him from getting out. When his path crosses Laia's he's immediately impressed with the slave girl. However, they have to be careful because of their different places in society. Will they be able to fight their way to freedom?

Laia had a sheltered upbringing. The moment the Masks, the Emperor's elite assassins, arrest Darin her life changes. She has to find a way to free him and there's nothing she wouldn't do to save his life. Laia is loyal, fierce and smart. She's a good plotter and she never gives up. I loved that about her. Elias has a conscience, which is something he isn't supposed to have. He's being trained to be a ruthless killer, but he isn't cruel. He has some very tough decisions to make and I was curious to find out what he would do. Sabaa Tahir describes his inner battles in an incredible deep and understanding way. Laia and Elias each have their own voice and both of them are equally compelling. I loved their connection and was immediately intrigued by their adventures.

An Amber in the Ashes is a gripping adrenaline-packed story. Sabaa Tahir's fighting scenes are fantastic. Her main characters often find themselves in situations that are out of their control and discovering how they'd get out of them again kept me on the edge of my seat. I enjoyed the way Sabaa Tahir uses tension, she often unleashes a terrible storm that has grave consequences, which is exciting reading material. Sabaa Tahir constantly surprised me, which is something I absolutely loved. I really enjoyed this fast-paced rollercoaster ride.

Laia finally knows where her brother Darin is. He's imprisoned in Kauf, which is the most secure prison in the empire. It's a place where prisoners are being tortured and a lot of them don't survive this ordeal. Laia knows she has to free her brother as soon as possible, because every day his chances of survival are becoming slimmer. Elias offers to accompany Laia on her dangerous and difficult journey and she gladly accepts his offer.

Elias has to leave his best friend Helene behind, but not for long. She's now the new Emperor's Blood Shrike and has been ordered to hunt him down and kill him. The Commandant also has plans with her son. Elias is constantly being chased. While fighting off opponents Elias and Laia also run into people who are fighting with them. Keenan is Laia's contact of the resistance and he's also coming with her to Kauf. While feelings are becoming very complicated there are battles that have to be fought and there's a prison that has to be broken into. Will they succeed or has their journey been in vain?

A Torch Against the Night is a fantastic story filled with brilliant tricks, magic, fascinating battles and difficult relationships. Sabaa Tahir has written a great sequel and I enjoyed this book just as much as An Ember in the Ashes. I especially loved the fighting scenes. Sabaa Tahir knows how to describe movements and she makes her characters come to life extremely well. Her vivid imagination is amazing and I liked reading about the phenomenal world she's created. It's dark, it's grim and it's filled with possibilities, which makes it really interesting. Sabaa Tahir writes with an extreme passion that I like a lot.

Elias and Laia have been through a lot already and there's much more to come. They never give up and they keep fighting for what they believe in. Nothing ever goes as planned, enemies are always close and it's difficult to stay one step ahead. I loved the power games and the nerve-wracking suspense. The characters are all intriguing and they have multilayered personalities. This book has three voices, Laia, Elias and Helene. I enjoyed reading the story from different points of view and was again captivated by Sabaa Tahir's beautiful writing. She plays with chaos and always remains in control, which is something I liked a lot. I think the An Ember in the Ashes series is spectacular and I highly recommend these mind-blowing books.
