Book Review - Somewhere to Begin by Mika Jolie & Giveaway

About Mika Jolie

Mika Jolie is the bestselling author of the Martha’s Way series. She lives in New Jersey with her Happy Chaos—her husband and their energizer bunnies. A sports fanatic and a wine aficionado, she’s determined to balance it all and still write about life experiences and matters of the heart. Let’s face it, people are complicated and love can be messy. When she’s not weaving life and romance into evocative tales, you can find her on a hiking adventure, apple picking, or whatever her three men can conjure up.

She loves to hear from readers.

Review by Anniek

Colbie comes from a very rich family. As a good daughter she does what's expected of her. She always follows the rules with a never ending smile on her lips, this includes trying to find the perfect man (on paper). Rich is supposed to be marrying rich. Colbie has never really been in love and her fiancé is a cruel and cold man. When Colbie walks down the isle she realizes what her life will be like if she decides to go through with the wedding. She has to speak now or forever hold her silence.

Navy Seal Zander is deployed in Afghanistan when he and his team end up in an ambush. Zander barely makes it out alive. At home keeps to himself, which means he doesn't leave the house all that often. Zander is injured on the outside as well as on the inside. He feels guilty about what happened in Afghanistan, especially about only managing the get one other soldier out alive. He still has nightmares and blackouts because of that horrific day. It's one of these blackouts that causes an accident with Colbie. Zander carries her out of her wrecked car and stays with her at the hospital. There is something about her that makes him unable to walk away.

Colbie always had enough money available, but that doesn't mean she had a happy childhood. Colbie's mother, father and brother are emotionless and cold. They don't have a loving family bond. It's important and expected to live according to the rules of the rich and to avoid putting shame on the family. After Colbie chooses to follow her own dreams she shows how determined she is to succeed. Colbie has a good sense of humor, is not afraid to get her hands dirty and she has a big loving heart. She has scars as well and I admired the way she deals with her fears. She is a strong woman and will fight with all her might for her own survival.

Zander has felt disconnected from his life since coming back from the war. His family members are loving and close and they won't let him go easily. They stay within reach and are pushing Zander to start living again. Zander is a proud man and he's struggling with the acceptance of the state his body and mind are in. He's gorgeous, kind and honorable, but his personality also has a different side. He's a Navy Seal and will do whatever is necessary to protect his loved ones. Zander has been through so much, but he still finds the strength to keep going and never give up.

Somewhere to Begin is a raw, emotional and pure story. It's beautifully written and shows you how people can overcome their struggles if they have the right family and friends to help them. Mika Jolie never fails to cast a spell on me, her stories are brilliant.  She got me hooked from the start and made Somewhere to Begin really come to life. I laughed and cried while reading and had a hard time switching off my Kindle. This is one of my books of the year and it's a story you shouldn't miss.

"Every scar earned should serve as a reminder of who you are, who you could become, and who you'll never be again." - Mika Jolie -
