Kate is the last mermaid. She has watched every other mermaid get sick and die. Not being able to leave she stays close to the island were she laid her people to rest. Every day Kate is walking along the shores of lake Eerie, looking for pieces of glass that once were a part of the mermaid world. Kate makes jewelry from these pieces and sells her creations at her shop.
Cooper has returned to Chancellor to spend the last of his remaining days in the house he inherited from his grandmother. Cooper has cancer and he knows he doesn't have much time left. Every day he paints the sunrise and the sunset. They are the most beautiful sights he has ever seen. Cooper has seen Kate walking the shores and is fascinated by her beauty.
Kate has lived for hundreds of years and she feels that her time is coming. When Kate meets Cooper she doesn't know that he's ill. Kate is such a kind person who loved her people very much. She has a big caring heart. Kate is mesmerizing as a mermaid and this shows through the person she is. I liked that a lot about this story.
Cooper is a wonderful man who has accepted his fate. It broke my heart when he was sharing his dreams knowing they wouldn't happen. Cooper wants to feel love just one more time and he is happy when Kate agrees to go to a dance with him. Cooper is a talented painter and I could picture his paintings vividly in my mind because of Poppy Lawles's colorful descriptions, I loved that creativity.
The glass mermaid is a beautiful story that made my heart ache, I love it when a story makes me feel so much. Poppy Lawless described the surroundings so well that I felt part of her magical world. I love reading about the myths that came into existence once in a small town and this story enchanted me from the beginning. I had a soft spot for Kate and Cooper immediately and these special main characters will be in my heart forever. The Glass Mermaid is a wonderful memorable story about true love in its purest form, it's a book I highly recommend.
