About Sarah Govett
I read law at Trinity College, Oxford. After qualifying as a solicitor, I set up my own tutoring agency, Govett Tutors, which specialises in helping children from all backgrounds.
I have also written for children’s television. I have two young children, and live in London with my stand-up comedian husband.

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?
My name’s Sarah Govett, but you know that already! I’m the author of The Territory that came out last year with Firefly Press. I live in London with my two young girls and stand-up comedian husband. I used to be a lawyer, then a tutor, now a writer. Third time lucky!
2. What kind of books do you bring with you when you go on holiday?
My favourite books to read at any time of the year are ideas based sci-fi. The likes of Wyndham, Christopher, Atwood. That sort of thing.
3. If you could spend a sunny day anywhere how would your perfect day look like?
It would involve water and wildlife – maybe a strolling along the river with my husband and girls, next to some sheep, followed by a long picnic (on a picnic rug with properly nice food). And we’d all be wearing white linen.
4. Could you tell us about your hobbies (when you are not writing or reading)?
I love craft – from painting to sewing via a bit of woodwork. I used to design and sell my own t-shirts and once made a pair of leather sleeves that I think are fabulous but my friends are not so sure about!
5. Where do you find the inspiration for your stories?
The Territory is a dystopian thriller that also serves as a critique of Britain’s highly pressurised education system. The inspiration for that came from running a private tutoring agency for the last ten years and seeing first hand how results are as much determined by type of school as natural intelligence and how logical subjects are elevated above more creative ones.
6. If you could be any leading character from a bestselling book, who would you be and why?
I have just finished the Mistborn trilogy and would love to be Vin (after she develops her powers). Burning metals, mind controlling crowds and leaping over castle walls sounds awesome.
7. What's your favorite reading spot?
I have two young children so at the moment the only reading I get done is in bed with one eye already closed. We’re moving house though and the plan is to build a window seat in the new kitchen. One that can fit a curled up person + book. I’ve been dreaming about it for months!
8. What is your favorite holiday destination and what do you like so much about it?
I love Abruzzo in Italy. Sandwiched between mountains and the sea it is absolutely stunning and not completely tamed.
9. Do you have any advice for authors who would like to write a sunny story?
I am always drawn to dark stories rather than sunny ones, but like any form of writing, the most important thing to do is actually sit down and type something. A lot of people talk about wanting to be an author, but it takes discipline and commitment to actually produce a book.
10. What can we expect from you in the future?
The Territory, Escape (book 2 in The Territory series) is out this October with FireflyPress. I’ve also just finished a completely different YA book, which I’m about to take to publishers so fingers crossed!
