The Books in the Series

1. Could you tell us a bit about yourself?

I’m from Michigan originally, but have lived all over in including on a Portuguese island. I love to read and I’ve worked as a journalist and now I write books.

2. What kind of books do you bring with you when you go on holiday?

I always bring a non-fiction book with me as well as a novel or two because I never know what I’m going to want to read on my downtime. I know you’re not supposed to admit this, but I like self-help books. I’m always looking to improve and work on myself. I like biographies and memoirs and I usually bring a YA book or a romance. I also like to buy a book that’s set in the area I’m staying. When I was on Mackinac Island in Michigan, I made sure to pick up a few novels set there.

3. If you could spend a sunny day anywhere how would your perfect day look like?

I’d want to go to Grand Haven, Michigan. I’ve been visiting there since I was a kid and love being by the lake (Lake Michigan) and walking on the pier to the lighthouse. I set my Star Series there because I think it’s such a romantic setting. I’d spend time downtime walking around and then head to the beach in the early evening so I can catch some sun, but also watch the sun go down later. I’d go for a walk on the pier and take lots of photos.

4. Could you tell us about your hobbies (when you are not writing or reading)?

I love reading and I’ve moved a lot, so I like catching up with my friends on different social media sites. I also love putting outfits and accessories together, so shopping and getting dressed are creative outlets for me.

5. Where do you find the inspiration for your stories?

For my Landry’s True Colors Series I find inspiration from my own teen years. I use a lot of my own memories to help me get into Landry’s world, but I like to give Landry her own experiences, too, as she deals with modeling and self-esteem issues that you go through while growing up. For the Star Series I also get into that whole self-esteem theme, but in this series I have the main character (Hadley) having to go through high school with a former teen TV star and how that impacts her self-confidence. I use some of my own memories, but I also look at gossip magazines (a guilty pleasure) for inspiration.

6. If you could be any leading character from a bestselling book, who would you be and why?

I always loved Mia from The Princess Diaries. She had a great sense of self, a loyal best friend, and I liked the relationship she had with her mom and later with her grandmother.

7. What's your favorite reading spot?

I love reading on my loveseat in my great room. I filled the armoire in the room with books and, truth be told, the coffee table has drawers that I’ve filled with books, too. It’s a great room to read in. I just moved and worried I wouldn’t adapt to this room like my last reading area, but one of the reasons I love the new house is that the great room is tucked away in the back. I hate when you walk into a house and boom, you’re in the living space. I hate open floor plans—there’s no mystery and no place to hide away.

8. What is your favorite holiday destination and what do you like so much about it?

Besides Grand Haven, Michigan, I also love Holland, Michigan and New York City. I visit Michigan a few times a year, but this year I also put going back to New York City on my list of things I wanted to do this year and I ended up getting an opportunity to attend a class there this summer. The class was ten hours long each day, but I managed to work in some site-seeing time, too! I stuck a protein bar in my bag so I could grab a snack before we headed out. It was pouring rain each evening, but I was determined to take in the city sites.

9. Do you have any advice for authors who would like to write a sunny story?

I’d say write the sunny story you’d want to read. I wrote Next Door to a Star about a girl who moved to a sunny vacation spot and wanted to reinvent herself and start fresh. There’s something about a beach town that inspires that fresh star feel and a romantic feeling as well.

10. What can we expect from you in the future?

I am working on the fourth book in the Landry’s True Colors Series and two more YA novels as well. One of the YA novels is set on the Portuguese island I lived on and includes a summer romance. I’m also working on a new adult novel.
